University of North Carolina wide receiver Hakeem Nicks has been named freshman All-America honorable mention by The Sporting News. A 6-1, 210-pound native of Charlotte, Nicks set UNC freshmen records with 39 receptions and 660 yards while scoring four touchdowns. He led the Tar Heels in receiving despite missing one game with a sprained ankle.

In the season finale against Duke, he posted his second 100-yard receiving game of the year with 117 yards on seven receptions.
