Carolina Defense Buckles Down In Scrimmage Win

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 14 North Carolina men's lacrosse team limited Washington & Lee to 12 shots and only two goals Saturday morning in a 12-2 exhibition game victory over the Generals at Henry Stadium.
The Tar Heels limited W&L two only two goals in the second quarter of the game while UNC scored six goals in each half to score an easy win over its NCAA Division III opponent. UNC started reserves and did not play its starters in the victory.
Nine different UNC players scored in the match with sophomore midfielder Ryan Walterhoefer, freshman midfielder Shane Walterhoefer and senior attackman Sean Link each producing two goals. Freshman attackman Matthias McCall and junior attackman each had two assists for Coach John Haus' Tar Heel team.
Grant Zimmeran and Trey Sheain each played 30 minutes in goal for Carolina with Sheain making three saves while allowing no goals in the second half.
UNC outshot the Generals 42-12, won 16 more ground balls than W&L and had a decided 13-4 edge at the faceoff X. Senior Dave Werry won seven of 10 faceoffs, while Shane Walterhoefer won three of four and freshman Chris Cortina three of three.
Ryan Walterhoefer, senior midfielder Ryan Tolson and junior attackman Ben Mark had goals in the first quarter to stake Carolina to a 3-0 lead. After W&L cut the margin to 3-1, UNC bounced back to get goals by senior attackman Sean Link, senior midfielder Andrew McElduff and junior midfielder Ben Staines to move in front 6-1, a lead which was never threatened.
Carolina dominated the second half, scoring six goals to zero for the Generals.
UNC will play its last scrimmage of the 2006 season against Rutgers at 12 noon Saturday, Feb. 11 at Henry Stadium.
