Hansbrough Named Carolina Performer Of The Week

Tyler Hansbrough averaged 28.5 points and eight rebounds in wins over Georgia Tech and Wake Forest to win Tar Heel Performer of the Week honors for February 13-19, 2006.
The Poplar Bluff, Mo. Freshman had 40 points and 10 rebounds in Carolina's 82-75 win over Georgia Tech, helping the Tar Heels rally from a 20-point deficit. He set ACC single-game freshman scoring record and Smith Center scoring record. It was his fourth double-double of the year and the most points scored at home by a Tar Heel since 1970.
Hansbrough added 17 points and six rebounds in Carolina's 83-72 win at Wake Forest, UNC's fifth conference road win. For the week, he was 19 for 28 from the floor (67.9 percent) and 19 for 26 (73 percent) from the line.

Latta scored a game-high 26 points to lead UNC to an 84-75 win at Virginia Tech on Friday. The junior guard was 4-for-7 from three points range and 10-for-16 from the field. She had five assists, two steals, her first block of the season and only one turnover in 35 minutes of play. With her four three-pointers, she now has 220 in her career, tied for ninth place in Atlantic Coast Conference history. She leads the No. 3 Tar Heels in scoring with 18.0 points per game.

Sophomore Chris Ramos lifted the Tar Heels to a dramatic come-from-behind win over Old Dominion Sunday with a pin in the final bout of the match. With Carolina trailing 16-13, Ramos pinned the Monarchs' Jeff Becker in just 1:44 to secure the Tar Heels' fourth straight dual victory. Ramos is now 15-13 this season with three pins.

Third baseman Reid Fronk led the Tar Heels with nine runs batted in in the weekend sweep of Seton Hall. After notching a career-best three RBI in Friday's win, the Charlotte native doubled that total with six RBI in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader. Fronk, who had a base-clearing double Friday, had a second bases loaded double in the fourth inning Sunday and followed with a three-run home run in the fifth. For the weekend, he hit .385 (5-13) with two doubles, a homer and nine RBI. Fronk had just 15 RBI all last season.

Playing only his second lacrosse game in nearly two years, Michael Burns, a redshirt freshman attackman, led the No. 15 North Carolina men's lacrosse team to a 14-5 season-opening victory over Ohio State February 18 in altimore, Md. Burns led all scorers in the game with six points as he scored three goals and passed for three assists. Burns, a 2004 graduate of Garden City High School, played in only the season opening game for UNC as a true freshman in 2005 before suffering an injury that put him out the rest of the season. Granted a medical redshirt, Burns earned his first career start against the Buckeyes and made his presence felt immediately as he assisted on Carolina's first three goals of the game to help stake UNC to a 6-0 lead. Burns went on to score three goals of his own in the second half as the Tar Heels posted a win in their season opener for the eighth straight year.

Brad Pomeroy led the 30th-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team to a pair of upset victories over two Top 20 squads last week as he went 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles. In UNC's 4-2 win February 13 against No. 12 South Carolina in Columbia, S.C., Pomeroy rallied from a set down at No. 2 singles to defeat Yevgeny Supeko of the Gamecocks 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to give UNC a 3-1 lead in the match en route to the 4-2 victory. Pomeroy also teamed with Raian Luchici to win at No. 1 doubles 8-3 over Thomas Stoddard and Tom Eklund of the Gamecocks. The singles win marked the 11th time in his career that Pomeroy has rallied from a set down to win in singles and he has done it each of the past three years against South Carolina. The win marked the first time since 1978 that either team had won more than two matches in a row against each other in the long-time series between the Tar Heels and the Gamecocks. On Saturday against 20th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth, Pomeroy and Luchici combined to win at No. 1 doubles against Arnaud Lecloerec and Petr Olsak of VCU 9-7. In singles, Pomeroy won at No. 3 singles over Francesc Lleal of VCU 6-4, 6-3 giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead en route to the eventual 4-2 win. The two wins improved Carolina to 11-0 this season in dual meets, the best start for UNC since Carolina began the 1973 season 13-0. The win over VCU also rewarded UNC head coach Sam Paul with his 199th career coaching victory at Carolina.

Lindsey Marck won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship in the 200-yard butterfly and finished second in the 100-yard butterfly as UNC took a third-place finish as a team in the 2006 ACC meet at the University of Maryland. Marck won gold in the 200-yard butterfly Saturday in a time of 1:59.17, her season best time and only .38 of a second off her career best time. Marck, who swam legs on four of UNC's five relay teams, finished second in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.08 seconds. That mark a career best for the UNC sophomore. Marck was also a consolation finalist in the 200-yard individual medley.

Freshman Amber Johnson threw her first career no-hitter to lead the No. 24 Carolina softball team to a 7-0 win over Toledo Friday in the Triangle Classic. Johnson struck out eight batters over seven innings to improve to 3-0 on the season and push the Tar Heels to 8-1 overall.

Senior Laura Gerraughty won the women's shot put at this weekend's Virginia Tech Challenge at the Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va. Her mark of 61 feet, 9 3/4 inches is the best in the United States by any women, collegiate or professional, in 2006, and an NCAA automatic qualifier.
