The NBA All-Star break began on Friday, February 17 and two former Tar Heels spent the weekend in Houston, Texas playing in the annual East-West game. Vince Carter and Rasheed Wallace both helped the Eastern Conference All-Stars edge the West by a score of 122-120. Carter scored five points, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out two assists, while Wallace scored two points, grabbed two rebounds, and had one steal. Teams return to regular season action tonight.
At the half-way point of the NBA season, four former Tar Heels average over ten points per game. Vince Carter, Antawn Jamison, Jerry Stackhouse, and Rasheed Wallace lead the way in scoring among UNC alum.
Update on Former Tar Heels in the NBA through the All-Star break:
Vince Carter, New Jersey Nets - Has started at guard in 49 games. He leads the team in scoring with an average of 23.7 points per game and is second on the team in assists with 4.6 per game. He ranks in the top 20 in the NBA in points per game, triple doubles, free throws, and efficiency rating. Carter scored a career-high 51 points against the Miami Heat on December 23, 2005. The Nets lead the Atlantic Division and rank third overall in the Eastern Conference with a record of 28-23. The team returns to action tonight against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Raymond Felton, Charlotte Bobcats - Has started at guard 27 of the 53 games in which he has played. He averages 9.4 points per game and ranks second on the team in assists with 4.5 per game. Felton recorded a career-high 24 points against the Seattle SuperSonics and handed out a career-high 13 assists against the Washington Wizards. He ranks in the top five among rookies in points per game and assists. The Bobcats sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a record of 14-40. The team returns to action tonight against the Denver Nuggets.
Brendan Haywood, Washington Wizards - Has started at center in 49 of the 51 games in which he has played. He leads the team in blocks per game with an average of 1.45. Haywood averages 8.4 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. The Wizards have a record of 26-25 and rank second in the Southeast Division and seventh in the Eastern Conference. The team returns to action tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Antawn Jamison, Washington Wizards - Has started at forward in 49 of the 51 games in which he has played. He leads the team in rebounds with an average of 9.8 per game and ranks second on the team in scoring with 19.6 points per game. Jamison ranks sixth overall in the NBA in double-doubles with 26 on the season. He grabbed a career-high 16 defensive rebounds against the Detroit Pistons on November 25, 2005. The Wizards have a record of 26-25 and rank second in the Southeast Division and seventh in the Eastern Conference. The team returns to action tonight against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Sean May, Charlotte Bobcats - Has missed a large portion of the season due to a knee injury. He started in one game and played in 23 before undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on January 19. In the games he played, May averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. He is expected to miss the remainder of the season. The Bobcats stand in last place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 14-40. The team returns to action tonight against the Denver Nuggets.
Rashad McCants, Minnesota Timberwolves - Has played at guard in 51 games. He averages 5.5 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. McCants scored a career-high 18 points against the Houston Rockets on January 27, 2006. The Timberwolves stand in third place in the Northwestern Division of the Western Conference with a record of 23-29. The team returns to action tonight against the Washington Wizards.
Jeff McInnis, New Jersey Nets - Has missed a large portion of the season due to a knee injury he suffered on January 14 against the Dallas Maveraicks. McInnis underwent arthroscopic surgery on January 19 to remove torn cartilage. Leading up to the injury he averaged 5.3 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game in his 11th NBA season. The Nets lead the Atlantic Division and rank third overall in the Eastern Conference with a record of 28-23. The team returns to action tonight against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Jerry Stackhouse, Dallas Mavericks - Missed a large portion of the season due to a shoulder injury incurred in the preseason. Since his return on December 23, 2005 he has averaged 12.8 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game. With Stackhouse in the lineup the Mavericks have a record of 21-4 as compared to the team's 19-7 record without him. Stackhouse's .885 free-throw percentage ranks eighth in the NBA. The Mavericks have the best record in the Western Conference at 41-11. The team returns to action tonight against the Los Angeles Clippers.
Rasheed Wallace, Detroit Pistons - Has started at forward in all 51 games. He averages 15.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. Wallace ranks in the top ten in the NBA in blocks, steals per turnover, and three-point field goals made. He has seven double-doubles on the season. The Pistons have the best record in the NBA with a mark of 42-9. The team returns to action tonight against the Atlanta Hawks.
Marvin Williams, Atlanta Hawks - Has started at forward in three of the 49 games in which he has played. He averages 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He scored a career-high 26 points against the Miami Heat on December 20, 2005. The Hawks have a record of 16-34. The team returns to action tonight against the Atlanta Hawks.
