The North Carolina gymnastics team swept every event Saturday night to win the 11th annual Governor's Cup Saturday for the fifth time in six years, triumphing over NC State, Maryland and Towson. The Tar Heels had their best meet of the season, scoring a 195.050 to dominate over runner-up and host team Maryland (192.375). NC State finished in third with a score of 192.250, and Towson held the fourth spot with a 191.300. For the fifth consecutive year, the two North Carolina schools dominated the two Maryland schools outscoring them 387.300-383.675. The North Carolina schools now lead the Governor's Cup series, 6-5.
"It was such an exciting meet," said Coach Derek Galvin. "It was not only our best performance of the year, but it was also one of the best meets that we've had in many years."
Senior Courtney Bumpers led Carolina with her first all-around title of the season. Bumpers tied for first on vault, finished first on beam and floor, and tied for eleventh on uneven bars. Her score of 9.925 on floor exercise was a season-high, as was her score of 9.875 on beam.
"Floor was our first event and it really set the tone for the rest of the meet," explained Galvin. "Courtney had a great all-around performance, especially on floor exercise."
Not only did the Tar Heels sweep every event but they also recorded team season highs on every single event as well. They finished with a team score of 49.075 on vault, 48.525 on uneven bars, 48.650 on beam, and 48.800 on floor exercise.
"I was so impressed with our team's focus, tone and enthusiasm tonight," said Galvin. "It was also a great return to play Maryland again. They beat us by .25 at home last Sunday, and we came into their arena and beat them by 2.675. So I'd say that we more than evened the score."
Junior Christine Robella also had a strong performance tying for third with teammate Jennifer Valby on vault, tying for fifth on uneven bars with teammate Shawna Kelly, tying for third on beam, and finishing in third on all-around.
Carolina's next meet against Florida, Arkansas, and West Virginia is on Friday, Feb. 10, at 7:00 p.m. in Gainesville, Florida.
