Gerraughty Wins Discus At Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. --- Senior Laura Gerraughty won the women's discus throw to highlight day one of the Raleigh Relays Friday night at Paul Derr Track. Gerraughty, who redshirted the outdoor season in 2005 due to a wrist injury, had a winning throw of 174 feet, 1 inch. Her effort was also an NCAA regional qualifying mark.
Senior Marija Kurtovic also had a regional qualifying mark, finishing third with a top throw of 167-1. Sophomore Jocelyn White was fifth in the shot put with a regional qualifying distance of 47-5.
Several Tar Heels advanced to Saturday finals in preliminary rounds Friday. Sophomore Tyra Johnson and freshman Shardae Anderson each advanced in the 100-meter dash with times of 12.29 and 12.44, respectively. Junior Porscha Dobson was fifth in qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles in 14.34. On the men's side, sophomore Bremen de Haan advanced in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.94.
The men also had a trio of top-five finishers in the field events. Junior Britt Taylor was fourth in the long jump (23-7 1/4), sophomore Ian Reynolds was fourth in the shot put (54-5 1/2) and junior Nick Owens was third in the discus (168-11).
Action continues Saturday with the men's javelin and hammer throws starting things off at 10 a.m.
