Ivory Latta Named Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

Ivory Latta scored the game-winning basket with 2.8 seconds to play to lift Carolina to a 70-68 win over Purdue to earn Tar Heel Performer of the Week honors for March 20-26, 2006. The McConnells, S.C., native had 19 points, eight assists and four steals in leading UNC past the Boilermakers in the Sweet 16 contest in Cleveland. Last Monday, Latta had 27 points in the 89-70 second round win over Vanderbilt.

Senior Crystal Cox was 3-0 for the week as the No. 24 North Carolina softball team improved to 28-10, 4-2 in the ACC. Cox extended her winning streak to six straight decisions, and is now just five strikeouts away from moving to second all-time in the ACC. The Harrisburg, N.C., senior notched two conference wins this week, allowing just one run in two victories over visiting Maryland.

Andrew Miller struck out a career-best 13 batters in seven shutout innings against No. 4 Georgia Tech and was named Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week. Against the Yellow Jackets, Miller allowed no runs on four hits and just one walk for his third shutout performance of six or more innings this season. Georgia Tech threatened in both in the second and fourth innings with two on and just one out, but Miller buckled down to strikeout the next two batters he faced to preserve the shutout. Miller did not allow a hit after the fifth, did not walk a batter after the second, struck out two batters in four separate innings and fanned the side in the fourth. The 13 strikeouts surpassed his previous career best of 12 against Arizona State March 4, 2005. Miller has fanned 10 or more batters in three of his last five starts and seven times in his career.

Anundsen had an outstanding weekend at No. 60 Virginia Tech and No. 43 Virginia. She went undefeated in both singles and doubles against the two top 50 ACC schools. Anundsen is currently ranked No. 95 in singles and No. 6 in doubles with partner Jenna Long. Anundsen clinched the match over Virginia Tech with a 7-6, 6-2 win over JJ Larson at the three seed. Over Virginia, Anundsen topped Rachel DelPriore, 6-1, 7-6. In doubles action, Anundsen and Long defeated two ranked opponents, Virginia Tech's Anat Elazari and Jennifer Larson, ranked 40th in the nation, 8-4, and Virginia's No. 15 Lori Stern and Kristen James, 8-5. With her wins this weekend, Anundsen posts a 20-8 overall singles record and 26-4 doubles record with Long.
MELISSA McCARTHY

McCarthy, a junior midfielder, scored five goals and had two assists in a pair of Tar Heel wins over the weekend. She scored three goals in a 9-4 win over Ohio State on Friday in the ACC/ALC Challenge in College Park, Md. McCarthy followed that effort with two goals and two assists in a come-from-behind, 16-12 win over No. 15 Penn State on Sunday. McCarthy scored the go-ahead goal that was the eventual game-winner against the Nittany Lions.

Browning swam a pair of career best times at the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming & Diving Championships and was the only Tar Heel to score points as UNC tied for 41st place in the team standings. Browning placed 12th in the 500-yard freestyle as he recorded career bests in that event and also in the 1650-yard freestyle. His times moved him into fifth place all-time at UNC in the 500 and third place all-time in the 1650. Browning earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 500.

Moved to the midfield for the first time this season, freshman Ben Hunt scored his first two career goals and placed four of his seven shots on goal. Despite the efforts of Hunt UNC fell to No. 4 Maryland 9-6. Hunt had played a reserve attack position in the first eight games of the season.

One of Carolina's senior captains, Raian Luchici went 2-0 in singles matches this past weekend to lead No. 12 North Carolina to a 4-3 victory over No. 10 Clemson and a 5-2 triumph over No. 27 Georgia Tech. Playing No. 1 singles, Luchici trailed Clemson's Sander Koning 3-0 in the final before winning six straight games, allowing Carolina to beat the Tigers 4-3. Luchici combined with Brad Pomeroy to win 8-4 in doubles against the Yellow Jackets and then he dominated Marko Rajevac at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2. Luchici's play allowed the Tar Heels to avenge 4-3 losses to both Clemson and Tech last season.
