Latta, Hansbrough Named Tar Heel Performers Of The Week

Ivory Latta's MVP performance led the Tar Heels to their second straight ACC Tournament championship and Tyler Hansbrough scored 27 points as UNC beat top-ranked Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Latta and Hansbrough are the Tar Heel Co-Performers of the Week for Feb. 27-March 5, 2006.
Latta averaged 20 points and 3.7 assists per game in wins over Virginia, NC State and Maryland as top-ranked UNC claimed its second ACC title in as many years.
Hansbrough led all scorers on both teams with 27 points in Carolina's 83-76 win at Duke. He scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half. The Polar luff, Mo. freshman added 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. He was 9 for 17 from the floor and 8 for 9 from the line and had two blocks and a steal in a season-high 37 minutes. Hansbrough also had 13 points and eight rebounds in UNC's 99-54 win over Virginia.

Preseason All-America Daniel Bard struck out a career-high 13 batters in a complete game five-hitter against Purdue Saturday. He also walked just one in his third career complete game. Bard (2-0) gave up two singles and hit a batter in the second but worked out of the bases loaded jam and then did not allow another hit until the seventh inning. The Charlotte native retired 13 of the next 14 batters he faced until Purdue right fielder Neal Gorka singled and second baseman Eric Osborn followed with a two-run home run for the Boilermakers' only runs of the game. After the homer, Bard settled back down to set down seven of the final nine batters he faced. His 13 strikeouts are the most by a Tar Heel since Garry Bakker also fanned 13 in a five-hit shutout at Virginia March 30, 2002. On the season, Bard now has a team-best 27 strikeouts against just two walks in 23 innings. He is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA. Opponents are hitting just .179 against Bard.

Redshirt freshman Jared Royer was one of three individual champions for the Tar Heels, who won their 17th ACC title Saturday. Seeded fourth at 133 pounds, Royer opened with a 5-4 upset over top-seeded Eric Albright of Virginia to reach the 133-pound final. The Cumberland, Pa., native then picked up a pair of first period takedowns and held on for a 6-3 win over Maryland's Brendan Byrne to claim his first-ever conference title. Royer, who wrestled in place of All-America Evan Sola for much of the season, is now 19-16 on the year. He is one of six Tar Heels slated to wrestle at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

With the No. 6 Tar Heels topping both No. 27 Indiana and Butler this past weekend, freshman Austin Smith played an intricate part in the action. Going a perfect 2-0 in singles and perfect 2-0 in doubles with partner Meg Fanjoy, Smith helped the Tar Heels to their wins. Smith clinched the Indiana match for North Carolina with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win over Alba Berdala. The No. 6 Tar Heels now post a 14-2, 1-0 record for the season.

Allen scored a team-high three goals and gathered a ground ball as the fifth-ranked women's lacrosse team beat No. 14 Loyola, 12-4, on Friday night. The Tar Heels improved to 3-0 on the season with the win.
BRAD POMEROY

Pomeroy was a dominant presence in his singles wins over Charlotte and Navy Saturday, March 4 as Carolina posted 7-0 victories over both teams. Pomeroy rank his season record to 13-5 in singles and 19-4 in doubles during the doubleheader at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. He also improved his career singles record to 62-29 and his career doubles mark to 72-33. Pomeroy bageled Dorian Horst of Charlotte 6-0, 6-0 in the first match and then defeated Nate Nelms of Navy 6-2, 6-0. Pomeroy and Raian Luchici joined ranks to post two wins at No. 1 doubles with an 8-0 win versus Charlotte and an 8-3 victory over Navy. The win over Charlotte rewarded UNC head coach Sam Paul with his 200th career victory at Carolina, becoming only the eighth coach in UNC history to win 200 or more matches at one school. UNC's win over Navy ran Carolina's record to 13-0, the best start to a Tar Heel season since the 1973 team won its first 13 matches of the season. UNC will play two matches over spring break at the University of San Diego March 13 and at San Diego State March 15.

Sophomore first baseman Jennifer Jacobs hit .545 over seven games to lead the No. 24 North Carolina softball team to a 5-2 record this week. Included among her 12 hits were two doubles and four home runs, including a grand slam against UNC Wilmington. The Tampa, Fla., product drove in 11 runs for the week and scored nine runs.
