Defending NCAA Champion Johns Hopkins Downs Tar Heels 11-5

BALTIMORE, MD. - Defending NCAA champion Johns Hopkins won its 23rd successive game played in the month of April and defeated North Carolina for the 13th straight time as the Blue Jays defeated the Tar Heels before a crowd of 2,804 at Homewood Field on the Johns Hopkins campus in Baltimore. Hopkins is now 49-1 in the last 50 games the Blue Jays have played in April.
Greg Peyser led the Blue Jays with three goals and an assist while Bart Wagner led UNC with two goals. Four of UNC's five goala dn one of the two assists came from Tar Heel freshmen.
Besides Peyser, Brian Cristopher had two goals and one assist for the Blue Jays while Kevin Huntley added a pair of goals and Paul Rabil had a goal and two assists. Jake Byrne added one goal and one assist for JHU. Other than Wagner's two goals, UNC got single goals from Brian Connors, freshman Shane Walterhoefer, his first career goal, and Michael Burns.
The 10th-ranked Blue Jays edged above the .500 mark on the season as Hopkins improved to 4-3. UNC lost its eighth successive game as the Tar Heels are now 2-8 on the season. The Blue Jays have won 13 in a row over Carolina dating back to a win in Chapel Hill in 1995.
Carolina's next challenge will be a match against No. 1 ranked and unbeaten Virginia next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field. The game begins a two-game homestand for the Tar Heels as UNC's matches up with Fairfield April 15 and then ends the regular season at Providence April 23.
The Tar Heels got on the board first with 14:03 left in the first quarter as sophomore midfielder Ryan Walterhoefer fed a pass from the top of the box to freshman attackman Bart Wagner who had set up to left of the crease. Wagner went top shelf right to put Carolina up 1-0. Johjns Hopkins answered back just 10 seconds later as midfielder Paul Rabil scored an unassisted goal for the Blue Jays off a restart after a violation by UNC on the face-off. Hopkins took its first lead of the game on a goal by Brian Cristopher, assisted by Paul Rabil, with 1:52 left in the first quarter and the Blue Jays led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Hopkins increased it lead to 3-1 on an unassisted goal by Kevin Huntley 54 seconds into the second quarter. The Blue Jays pushed their lead to 4-1 on a goal by Mark Bryan as he rolled the creased and scored on a bounce shot with 5:03 left in the first half. Bart Wagner scored his second goal of the game off an assist by Bobby McAuley with 2:07 left before haltime. McAuley fed a pass from out top to Wagner who positioned himself to the right of the crease and then went high and hard past Hopkins goalkeeper Jesse Schwartzman. The Tar Heels then pulled within a goal six seconds later when midfielder Shane Walterhoefer won his own face-off and charged down the midfielder of the field to fire and hard, high one past Schwartzman. But Hopkins answered back just seconds later on a goal by Kevin Huntley who took a pass on the crease from Jake Byrne and scored on an over-the-shoulder bounce shot.
Outshooting the Tar Heels 20-10 in the first half,. Johns Hopkins carried a 5-3 lead into the locker room at intermission.
A 4-0 scoring advantage by Johns Hopkins in the third quarter blew the game open for the Blue Jays. The Blue Jays increased their lead to three goals for the second time when Greg Peyser scored an unassisted goal for Hopkins with 12:30 left in the third quarter. The Blue Jays then scored an extra-man goal with 5:20 left in the quarter as Jake Byrne scored from outside assisted by Drew Dabrowksi giving Hopkins a 7-3 lead. The lead for Johns Hopkins grew to 8-3 with 3:38 left in the thrid quarter as Brian Cristopher scored an unassisted goal from the top of the box. Hopkins made the lead 9-3 with six seconds left in the third quarter on a goal by Greg Peyser with an assist by Brian Cristopher.
The Hopkins lead grew to seven goals 1:19 into the fourth quarter as Greg Peyser scored from the left side assisted by Paul Rabil. The Tar Heels scored their first goal of the second half as sophomore midfielder Brian Connors tallied his third goal of the year with 10:39 left in the period. An unassisted goal by Michael Burns got the Tar Heels within 10-5 with 8:07 to play in the game. Burns beat his defender and rolled the crease on the left side to score past Schwartzman.
Hopkins made the score 11-5 on a goal by Michael Doneger who scored in front unguarded on the crease off an assist by Greg Peyser.
Hopkins outshot the Tar Heels 41-32 and had an 11-9 edge in face-offs. UNC held a slight advantage in ground balls 39-36. Jesse Schwartzman ended up with 13 saves and five goals allowed for Hopkins while freshman Grant Zimmerman made 11 saves for the Tar Heels.
