Tar Heels Head To Blacksburg In First Place: No. 22 North Carolina (40-11, 9-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) will head north this weekend to face league rival Virginia Tech in a three-game series. Carolina has won all four of its ACC series so far in 2006, taking two of three at Florida State, two of three at home against Maryland, sweeping three games at Virginia and winning two of three at Boston College. This marks just the second year that ACC series have been three-game affairs. Prior to 2005, teams only played a doubleheader.
Carolina On Record Pace: With a win over ECU Wednesday, UNC improved to 40-11 and became the second team in the nation to reach 40 wins, joining Texas. The school record for wins is 47, set by the 2000 squad that finished 47-17. Carolina also has a winning percentage of .784, ahead of the school record mark of .760 (36-11-1) set in 1987. The Tar Heels have reached 40 wins on seven occasions - 1992, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005.
Last Season Against Virginia Tech: UNC and Virginia Tech split the 2005 season series, with each side winning two games. However, the Tar Heels took two of three from the Hokies in the ACC series, winning the final two games by scores of 11-1 and 1-0. Tech scored a 4-0 victory in the ACC Tournament in College Park, Md. All three regular season games were played in Chapel Hill.
Last Time Out: Carolina aveneged a March 8 loss to East Carolina with a 3-1 win Wednesday at Anderson Stadium. Breanna Brown doubled home three runs in the fifth and Lisa Norris got the win in the circle.
Carolina In The Top 25: UNC is ranked 22nd in the most recent USA Today/NFCA Top 25 for the second week in a row. The Feb. 15 ranking was the first Tar Heel appearance in the USA Today/NFCA poll in program history.
