CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 4 North Carolina women's tennis team swept No. 64 Boston College Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. Winning all three doubles matches and all six singles matches, the Tar Heels topped the Eagles, 7-0. Freshman Austin Smith clinched the match at the three seed over Alina Sullivan. North Carolina improved its record to 22-3 overall and 7-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while Boston College now stands at 7-6, 0-7.
Doubles action saw Tar Heel wins from the one, two and three seeds. Caitlin Collins and Laura Reichert faced Boston College's Alina Sullivan and Sarah Svoboda at the two seed, improving their record to 7-7 with the 8-0 win. Clinching the doubles point for the Tar Heels at the three seed was Tanja Markovic and Austin Smith. Markovic and Smith downed Boston College's Lindsey Nash and Gia Nafarrete, 8-4. The Tar Heel duo remains perfect in dual competition with a record of 4-0. No. 6 Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long cruised past Lana Krasnopolsky and Dash Cherkasov at the one seed, 8-4. Anundsen and Long are now 29-4 on the overall season.
In singles action, North Carolina swept Boston College at all six seeds in straight sets. No. 95 Sara Anundsen cruised past Sarah Svoboda at the four seed, 6-1, 6-0, giving Carolina a 2-0 lead over Boston College. No. 32 Jenna Long earned her 26th win with a victory over No. 100 Lana Krasnopolsky, defeating Krasnopolsky, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Austin Smith clinched the match at the three seed, earning her 27th team-leading singles win over Alina Sullivan. Smith beat Sullivan, 6-3, 6-1.
Junior Caitlin Collins competed at the one seed against Dash Cherkasov. Collins beat Cherkasov, 6-0, 7-5 in her 24th overall win. At the six seed, Charlotte Tansill gained her 14th victory over Lindsey Nash, defeating Nash, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Laura Reichert closed out the match for the Tar Heels, downing Gia Nafarrete, 6-3, 6-4.
Head coach Brian Kalbas was pleased with the overall weekend. "I am proud of the team," said Kalbas. "I am especially happy for Caitlin [Collins] and Jenna [Long] because they played good players today. We did a good job of pressuring them [Boston College] and it was a wonderful overall weekend."
"Going in to the Duke match we are healthy and confident and we are looking forward to the good competition once again to see where we stand."
The Tar Heels will take on No. 12 Duke on Wednesday, April 5 in Durham. North Carolina closes out its season the weekend of April 8, hosting Georgia Tech on Saturday and Clemson on Sunday.
