NEW LONDON, N.C. -- Robert Riesen and Martin Ureta each shot a 68 in the first round of the ACC Championship at the Old North State Club as the North Carolina men's golf team combined for a score of 278 to put themselves in second place heading into the second round. Riesen, a freshman out of Pinehurst, N.C., is currently in third overall along with teammate Martin Ureta.
Riesen was even at the turn, but following an eagle on the par four 13th, gained momentum and went on to birdie two of his last five holes. After Riesen's eagle, all of the Tar Heels stepped up their play.
"We didn't do much through nine. Robert (Riesen) holed out a wedge on #13 for an eagle and it just opened the flood gates: we had a lot of birdies on the back nine and an eagle on #18 (Jonathan Jackson)", said Head Coach John Inman.
Following Riesen's lead, Ureta also had a strong back nine that featured five birdies. Jackson's eagle on 18 put him at one under for the championship. Chase MacFarland, another freshman, is also at one under par after he was able to muster three birdies on the back nine, giving Carolina four individuals under par.
Three strokes ahead of Riesen and Ureta is the current leader Michael Barbosa of first place Georgia Tech. Barbosa fired an eagle to start his day on the first hole and then followed that feat on the 18th as he carded yet another eagle. The Yellow Jackets combined for a 276, two strokes better than Carolina's 278. Six strokes separates Carolina from Maryland and N.C. State who are currently grid locked at third. Seven teams along with 20 individuals are under par heading into the second round, something Inman contributed to the course environment. "It was a great day for scoring. The golf course is in great shape as usual. There was no wind: it was perfect scoring conditions."
Also ahead of the Carolina duo is Matthew Savage of Florida State who is at five under. Clemson's Brian Duncan and Maryland's John Eades sit beside Riesen and Ureta, making it a current four-way tie for third.
The ACC Championship is also a Carlyle Cup event as one Carlyle Cup point will be awarded to either Duke or North Carolina depending on which team records a higher finish in the tournament. The current Carlyle Cup standings have Duke ahead of Carolina with 11 points to 10. Duke received their latest point last week in the women's golf ACC Championship. Duke currently sits in seventh at the Championship at one under, nine strokes back of the Tar Heels.
Carolina will play their second round Saturday as play continues at the Old North State Club. This marks the 10th year that the ACC Championship has been held there.
