CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman catcher Tim Federowicz doubled to lead off the bottom of 14th inning and scored on a throwing error by NC State closer Sam Walls to give No. 1 North Carolina a 3-2 victory and its first series win over the No. 7 Wolfpack since 2002 Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. The Tar Heels (33-8, 14-6 ACC) will go for the sweep of the NCSU (31-12, 13-7 ACC) in game three of the series, which started at 1:21 p.m.
After setting State down in order in the top of the 14th, Carolina got a leadoff double from Federowicz off the wall in left center to open the bottom of the inning. Right fielder Seth Williams bunted to move Federowicz to third, but Wall fielded the ball and threw toward third where no one was covering to allow the winning run to score.
Sophomore Andrew Carignan (1-1) earned the win after retiring all five batters he faced. He came on with two on and just one out in the 13th and stranded both runners before retiring all three batters he faced in the 14th. Walls (5-1) took the loss after working two innings. Federowicz's double was the only hit he allowed.
In a game that ended nearly 24 hours after its scheduled start time, Federowicz was one of four Tar Heels with two hits as he extended his current hitting streak to eight games. Shortstop Josh Horton, center fielder Mike Cavasinni and Williams also had two base hits, while first baseman Chad Flack pushed his hit streak to eight games.
First pitch of the game was thrown at 3:34 p.m. Saturday - two and a half hours after its scheduled start time - and it was halted in the top of the 12th at 6:44 p.m. last night.
After picking up where the game was halted Saturday with a runner on second and one out, Carolina reliever Matt Danford needed just two pitches to get out of the 12th as Jonathan Diaz lined out to Horton, who stepped on second for the inning-ending double play.
The Tar Heels went in order against Walls in the bottom of the inning before the Wolfpack put two runners on with just one out in the top of the 13th on a double by second baseman Ramon Corona and an intentional pass to first baseman Aaron Bates. Carignan came on to get the final two outs and preserve the tie.
UNC starter Robert Woodard allowed just one earned run on five hits and two walks over seven innings. The Charlotte product struck out three and carried a no-hitter into the fifth. Woodard continued an outstanding run of pitching against NC State and has allowed just eight hits and two earned runs in 17.2 career innings. Carolina also got four strong innings of relief from Jonathan Hovis, who allowed just three singles and struck out three after entering to open the eighth.
After allowing the go-ahead run in the fifth, NC State reliever Gib Hobson kept the Tar Heels in check with seven innings of shutout relief. He has allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out six. NC State starter Eric Surkamp allowed two runs on six hits and four walks over four-plus innings. Corona, catcher Caleb Mangum and third baseman Matt Mangini each had two hits for the Wolfpack.
The Tar Heels scored their first run Saturday on a third inning sacrifice fly by Horton and reclaimed the lead in the fifth on a bases loaded, two-out single by Federowicz. Left fielder Jay Cox got caught in a rundown between second and third on Federowicz's base hit and Horton was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and keep the score at 2-1.
State scored in the fifth when Mangum singled for the Pack's first hit of the day and came around to score on a single up the middle by Mangum for State's first against Woodard in 15.1 innings dating to 2004. The Wolfpack tied the score for second time in the sixth on a throwing error by Williams. Corona hit a bloop single to right that sent center fielder Matt Camp to third before Williams' errant throw allowed the tying run to score.
