BALTIMORE, MD. -- Four University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players were named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team after a vote of the conference's six head coaches, the ACC announced on Thursday night at the pre-ACC Tournament banquet at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
Juniors Jenn Cook and Christina Juras both earned All-ACC honors for the second season in a row, while fellow juniors Kristen Hordy and Melissa McCarthy were named to the team for the first time.
Katie Chrest of Duke was named the ACC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, while Kerstin Kimel of Duke was named ACC Coach of the Year for the third year in a row. Blair Weymouth of Virginia was named ACC Rookie of the Year.
Duke and Maryland led all schools with five student-athletes named to the all-conference team. Carolina and Virginia each placed four players on the team, while Virginia Tech had one.
Cook has been one of the top defenders in the nation in each of the last two seasons and is a strong candidate for All-America honors for a second year in a row in 2006. Named a preseason first-team All-America by Inside Lacrosse. Cook is one of 21 players in the nation on the final Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List.
Hordy, also one of the final 21 names on the Tewaaraton Watch List, ranks sixth in the nation in goals-against average and save percentage. She was named the co-ACC Player of the Week on April 17 after recording nine saves in a win over Old Dominion and 11 in a win over Maryland. Prior to the season, she was named a preseason third-team All-America by Inside Lacrosse.
Juras earns All-ACC honors for the second year in a row after finishing the regular season ranked third on the team in points this spring. She is tied for second on the Carolina squad in assists and is third in goals. Juras scored twice at Virginia, had a goal and an assist versus Maryland and a goal versus Duke.
McCarthy, named a preseason third-team All-America by Inside Lacrosse, missed all but one game of the 2005 season after a knee injury. She has recovered to lead Carolina in assists this spring. She was named the ACC Player of the Week on March 20 after totaling three goals and four assists in wins over Virginia and Virginia Tech.
Carolina, seeded third, opened ACC Tournament play on Thursday with a 12-7 win over sixth-seeded Virginia Tech. The Tar Heels advance to Friday's semifinal to play No. 2 seed Virginia at 3 p.m. The Tournament is being held at M & T Bank Stadium, home of the National Football League's Baltimore Ravens.
