While basketball season may be over for some, it's just beginning for others. As June rapidly approaches, so does the summer basketball camp season for many kids. It's not too often, though, that you also find dads breaking out the old knee brace and brushing up on their skills; except for once a year in preparation for the annual Eric Montross Father's Day Basketball Camp.
2006 marks the 12th season of this special camp that provides dads and their children a weekend experience in Chapel Hill-on the court-raising money for the North Carolina Children's Hospital.
Eric Montross began the camp in 1994 in memory of Jason Clark, one of the remarkable young patients treated at the hospital, who unfortunately lost his battle with cancer after a 9-month fight. Since the camp's inception, over $600,000 has been raised to fund programs such as the Jason Clark Teen Activity Center, painted murals throughout the hospital, and pediatric oncology treatment.
The goal of Montross Camp is to encourage father-child interaction and to learn new skills that can be translated into the real world both on and off the court. This special weekend allows for all of this, but also teaches the important lesson of learning to help others.
This year's camp will be held June 16-17 at the Smith Center in Chapel Hill. While camp is currently full, the North Carolina Children's Hospital has released a spot that was previously donated for auction purposes at an event earlier this year. That spot is currently available via online auction that will end on May 15. To participate in the auction, click here.
More information regarding this auction can be found on the Ebay listing. Please note that all bids have to be placed through the Ebay website.
