Tar Heel Men's Golf Team Moves Up To 17th At NCAA Championship

SUNRIVER, ORE. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a one-over-par 289 in the second round of the NCAA Championship and moved up to 17th place with a 10-over 586 total. Washington leads the 30-team field with a 13-under 563 after firing a six-under 282 at Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Golf Course.
Wake Forest and Arizona State are three stokes behind the Huskies with 10-under 566 totals. Florida is alone in fourth place at 569 while Clemson and Kentucky are tied for fifth at 570, Oklahoma State is seventh at 572 and Minnesota is eighth at 573.
The Tar Heels were led in the second round by senior Jonathan Jackson and freshman Robert Riesen who both fired a two-under 70, Jackson, from Chapel Hill, and Riesen, from Pinehurst, N.C., are deadlocked in a tie for 63rd place, Junior Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, is two strokes back at 148 in a tie for 92nd after carding a 76. Chase MacFarland, a freshman from Savannah, Ga., posted a one-over 73 for a 150 total and is tied for 117th place while senior Ted Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, has a 151 total and is tied for 122nd after carding a 78.
Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest held on to the individual lead firing a two-under 70 for a nine-under 135 total. Four players are three strokes back in a tie for second place with six-under 138 totals - Washington's Zach Bixler, Arizona State's Niklas Lemke and Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin and Jonathan Moore. Another four players are tied for sixth place at five-under 139 - Arizona State's Alejandro Canizares, Washington's Alex Prugh, Lamar's Dusty Smith and Kentucky's Andy Winings.
The 72-hole event continues through Saturday at the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Golf Course which features a par 72, 7,630-yard layout. After Friday's third round the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on those 15 teams.
