North Carolina will play for its first-ever national title in baseball in this weekend's best-of-three championship series against either Oregon State or Rice. The Tar Heels will also be playing for the ACC's first championship since Wake Forest claimed the crown in 1955.
At 8-0, the Tar Heels are the only unbeaten team in the NCAA tournament. UNC's current winning streak matches its second-longest of the season. The Tar Heels, who now have a school-record 53 wins, won nine straight from April 21-May 9. Carolina's last five wins have come against top-five national seeds in the tournament field.
Jay Cox homered in the third and fifth innings for his second multi-home run game of the NCAA tournament (Winthrop, June 3) and the sixth of the season by a Tar Heel. Cox now has six homers in eight NCAA games and 15 on the season, which leads Carolina. Twenty of Cox's career-best 64 RBI on the season have come in the NCAA tourney.
Jay Cox and Tim Federowicz hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the fifth inning, becoming the first players to go back-to-back in the CWS since Missouri State's Greg Mathis and Jacob Hilgendorf June 14, 2003.
Jay Cox's four RBI Wednesday are the most by a Tar Heel in a CWS game. Mike Fox held the previous mark with three against St. John's June 4, 1978.
With three home runs Wednesday, the Tar Heels have hit 82 on the year for the fifth-best single-season total in program history.
In two games, the Tar Heels hit five home runs off of Cal State Fullerton ace Wes Roemer. He allowed just nine home runs this season and only four entering the CWS. Roemer went just 4.2 innings Wednesday for the shortest start of his career.
Daniel Bard improved to 9-3 with Wednesday's win for a single-season best. He also now has 24 career victories to rank fifth on the Tar Heels' single season list.
With two strikeouts against CSF Wednesday, Daniel Bard is now tied for 10th on the Tar Heels' career list with 237. Bard allowed five runs on a career-high 12 hits versus the Titans.
In his first relief appearance since 2004, Andrew Miller picked up his first career save with the final out of the ninth. Miller now has four career relief appearances.
Jonathan Hovis made his 36th appearance of the season, which is tied for third all-time at UNC. He is also fifth with 104 career appearances. Hovis has not allowed a run in his last 18 games to lower his NCAA-best ERA to 1.20.
Seth Williams went 3-for-4 Wednesday to become the fifth Tar Heel with three hits in a CWS game.
Fullerton snapped the Tar Heels' CWS scoreless inning streak at 20.1 innings on a Clark Hardman RBI single in the second Wednesday. Carolina held the Titans scoreless for the final 10 innings in the June 16 win and blanked Clemson June 18 behind Robert Woodard.
Carolina used the same batting order for the third straight game for just the second time this season and first since April 9-14. For the second straight contest, all 10 players in the starting lineup for UNC were from the state of North Carolina.
