CHAPEL HILL --- Amy Beaver finished with 11 kills and hit .667 for the match as North Carolina defeated NC State for the 19th straight time, 30-22, 30-27, 30-15, Friday night at Carmichael Auditorium. Beaver and Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland dominated the middle, combining for seven of UNC's 12 blocks, as the Tar Heels won the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams.
NC State (2-8, 0-1 ACC) was at its best to open game one, surging to an 11-6 lead. But the Tar Heels (3-7, 1-0 ACC) would quickly take over. UNC won 13 of the next 19 points to move ahead 19-17, with an Amy Beaver kill off an overpass punctuating the run. After a Wolfpack timeout at 21-19, Carolina won nine of the final 12 points to secure the game, 30-22. Hanson-Tuntland was the standout during that stretch, contributing two kills and a block. The Tar Heel block was strong throughout the frame, as the Carolina defense held NC State to a -.027 hitting percentage.
The Wolfpack held the early advantage again in game two, opening up a 12-9 lead. But a quick 5-1 run by the Tar Heels featuring a pair of kills by Noelle Dyk gave Carolina a 14-13 advantage. Unlike in game one, however, NC State would respond. The Wolfpack ran off six of the next eight points to pull ahead 19-16. That was followed by a dominant 9-1 run by Carolina that gave the hosts a 25-20 lead. NC State would make it interesting, pulling with one at 27-26, but the Tar Heels would take the game, 30-27. Beaver was the difference in game two, finishing the stanza with three kills, three service aces and two blocks.
After two closely contested games, the final frame was never in doubt. Carolina led the entire way en route to a 30-15 win. The Tar Heels closed the match with an 8-1 run that featured a pair of service aces by Stephanie Jansma. UNC hit .500 for the frame, notching 16 kills against just two attack errors.
Carolina will hit the road next weekend to face Virginia Tech and Virginia. The Tar Heels will take on the Hokies Thursday and the Cavaliers Friday, with both matches set to start at 7 p.m.
