NORTH CAROLINA POSTGAME NOTES
NORTH CAROLINA VS. FURMAN, SEPT. 16, 2006
The 87 points are the most combined points in a UNC game since the Tar Heels and Syracuse combined for 96 in a 49-47 triple overtime win by the Orange on Sept. 6, 2003. Carolina's 45 points are the most scored by UNC in a game since a 49-38 win over William and Mary on Sept. 4, 2004.
The 42 points by Furman equal the most ever allowed by UNC in a win (matches a 59-42 win over Maryland on Sept. 11, 1993, and a 56-42 win over Army on Nov. 16, 1974).
Ronnie McGill scored four touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) against Furman for his first career four TD game and the first four-touchdown game by any Tar Heel since Chesley Borders had four touchdown catches at Arizona State on Oct. 5, 2002.
McGill's 58-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter was the longest catch of his career, eclipsing a 21-yard grab against Virginia in 2003. McGill now has 22 career touchdowns (20 rushing, two receiving).
McGill had 114 yards rushing, his first 100-yard game since he had 146 against Duke on Nov. 19, 2005. McGill finished the night with 174 scrimmage yards (114 rushing, 60 receiving).
Barrington Edwards' 34-yard touchdown run was his longest as a Tar Heel and his longest run since a 62-yard dash at NC State last season. Edwards also had his longest reception at Carolina, a 16-yarder in the second quarter.
Red-shirt freshman quarterback Cam Sexton made his first career start and was 14-for-20 for 265 yards and two scores. He now has three touchdown passes on the season.
Senior receiver Jesse Holley's 50-yard, go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter marked the longest catch of his career. Holley's last touchdown grab came against Utah in 2005. He finished with three catches for 85 yards.
Carolina and Furman combined for 23 first downs in the first half. The Tar Heels were 5-for-7 on third down, while the Paladins were 6-for-7. Furman totaled 30 first downs in the game, 10 more than Carolina.
Carolina's 21 first-quarter points marked its most in any quarter since also putting up 21 in the third quarter against Georgia Tech Sept. 18, 2004.
Junior punter John Choate saw his first action since a Sept. 25, 2004 loss to Louisville and averaged 41.0 yards on two punts.
Furman had 521 yards of total offense, the most allowed by UNC since Maryland had 524 in 2005.
