Riding first-place finishes in the pole vault and the 3,000 meters, the North Carolina women distanced themselves from the field at the Clemson Invitational Saturday, claiming the team title with a 124-point total. Though the Tar Heel men dropped from their third-place standing after the first day of competition, strong performances from a cadre of athletes helped them compile 67 points on their way to a fourth-place finish overall.
Sophomore Brie Felnagle and freshman Abby Kimball led the way for the Carolina women Saturday as the day's lone event winners. They joined sophomore Morgan Stengel, who won the women's 5,000 meters on Friday. Felnagle easily took the women's 3,000 meters in 9:15.01 - a full 45 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Her time also gave her an NCAA qualifying mark in just her first race of the season.
Kimball, meanwhile, spearheaded more Carolina domination in the pole vault as her 12-8 3/4 clearance gave her a new personal best as well as first place in the event, which saw a total of four Tar Heels score points. Rhian Jenks was second with a 11-11 3/4 height, while freshman Aly Goldfarb and junior Alison McGinnis both placed sixth with identical 10-11 3/4 marks.
Junior Tyra Johnson narrowly missed out on sweeping the 60- and 200-meter dashes, finishing second in each event. Her time of 7.56 seconds in the 60-meter dash was a new personal best and just two-hundredths of a second off the winning mark, while her 24.75 in the 200 was one of only two sub-25 second times in the event.
Senior Porscha Dobson gave Carolina another second-place finish, posting a 8.53 time in the women's 60-meter hurdles.
Also helping the Tar Heel effort were Callie Pottinger, Addie Bracy and Colleen Farley, who all finished fourth in their respective events. Pottinger ran a 57.09 in the 400 meters, Bracy crossed the line in 5:07.61 in the mile, and Farley recorded a 2:17.54 in the 800 meters. Pottinger and Farley also teamed with Niobra Peterson and Nyoka Norman to help pace North Carolina to a seventh-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.
In the field events, North Carolina had multiple scorers in the high jump, long jump and shot put. Ashley Haislip put up a third-place showing in the high jump with a 5-7 clearance, while freshman La'Shonda Carter (5-5) placed fourth.
Carter's 19-1 1/4 effort in the long jump gave her a second fourth-place finish on the day, and classmate Ashley Hill joined her in the scoring column with a sixth-place finish on a 18-8 jump.
Rounding out the scoring for the Tar Heels were Kelly Fazekas and Kimberly Warren who finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the shot put. Fazkeas posted a 46-4 mark, slightly better than Warren's 46-3 1/4 toss.
The Carolina men enjoyed a strong second-place showing by Reggie Berry in the 200-meter dash to get things going. Berry broke the tape in 21.82 seconds, three-hundredths of a second out of first place.
Joining Berry in the scoring were two Tar Heel freshmen competing in their first collegiate meet. Adam Smith ran a 1:56.48 to finish third in the 800 meters and Donte Nall used a 6-8 clearance in the high jump to take third himself.
The Tar Heel men received three individual fourth-place finishes on Saturday as well: from sophomore Tristram Thomas in the 3,000 meters (8:34.80), from sophomore Daniel Keller in the pole vault (15-7) and from junior Ian Reynolds in the shot put (53-7).
The rest of the scoring for the North Carolina men came from Ryan Booker, who finished fifth in the 400 in 49.36, and Bremen de Haan, whose 8.40 mark in the 60-meter hurdles gave him sixth place. As well, the Tar Heel 4x100-meter relay team of Cody Harper, Clay Ragan, Ryan Booker and Reggie Berry finished third in 3:18.35.
Both the men and women will next be in action at the UNC Fast Times meet on Jan. 26-27.
