DURHAM, N.C. - Ranked fifth nationally by Baseball America, North Carolina was also well represented when the Durham-based publication listed its preseason Atlantic Coast Conference honors in its Jan. 29 issue. Three Tar Heels - infielders Chad Flack and Josh Horton, as well as right-hander Robert Woodard - were named to BA's preseason all-conference team, and Alex White was honored as the ACC's preseason freshman of the year.
In addition to its preseason conference awards, Baseball America also rated the league's top prospects for the 2007 Major League Baseball draft with Horton checking in at No. 6 and sophomore right-hander Luke Putkonen ranking 10th. Sophomore catcher Tim Federowicz was ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the ACC for the 2008 draft.
White, a 14th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2006 and a Greensville native, was also rated as the league's top newcomer.
Additionally, Horton and Woodard were honored with some of the "Best Tools" in the league. Horton was cited as the best defensive shortstop and the owner of the best infield arm, while Woodard was listed as having the ACC's best change-up and best control.
The Tar Heels open the 2007 season against Seton Hall Feb. 16.
