GREENSBORO, N.C. - North Carolina's Ivory Latta and Florida State's Jacinta Monroe were named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week following impressive performances last week. In front of an energetic ACC record crowd on Sunday night, Latta scored a season-high 32 points and the unbeaten Tar Heels pulled off an 84-71 win against defending national champions Maryland. Monroe picks up her third weekly honor of the season after averaging 11.5 points and a team-high nine rebounds in FSU's two games last week.
Latta scored 22 of her season-high 32 points in the second half Sunday night. In addition, the senior guard finished 9-for-18 and was 8-for-8 at the charity stripe. Latta matched a career-high with six three-pointers against the Terrapins, going 6-for-10 from beyond the arc.
While Latta holds the career record of five Player of the Week honors among active ACC players, the accolade is her first of the 2006-07 season. Latta currently ranks fourth among ACC players in scoring (16.2 ppg) and sixth in assists (4.65 apg), while the standout tops the charts in three-point field goals made per game (3.0).
Monroe averaged 22.0 points per game in two starts and had six blocks on the week. In the 63-47 win over Virginia, Monroe recorded her third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds in just 20 minutes of play. The rookie has scored in double figures in seven of the last 10 games.
Monroe has led the Noles in rebounding in six games, including both games last week, and has grabbed seven or more boards in nine games. The rookie leads all league freshmen in blocked shots (43) and field goal percentage (.590), while ranks second in rebounding with 6.3 boards per game.
Both squads return to action on Thursday, February 1. The No. 2 Tar Heels travel to Boston College for a 7 p.m. tip-off, while the Seminoles play at Miami in a Comcast Sports Southeast broadcast.
