Carolina Golfers In 16th Place At Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, TENN. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team carded a 15-over-par 299 in the second round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship for a 604 total and stands in 16th place going into the final round. Florida holds a five-stroke lead with a nine-over 577 total after firing a four-over in the second round. Purdue and Arkansas are tied for second place with 14-over 582 totals. Denver is third at 585 while Virginia and Auburn are tied for fifth place at 588.
Tar Heels Lauren Hunt and Laura Caniff both carded two-over 73s in the second round. Hunt, a junior from Little River, S.C., is tied for 32nd with a 149 total while Caniff, a senior from Russell, Ky., is one shot back at 150 in a tie for 37th. Sophomore Kate Thomas is also tied for 37th at 150 after carding a 77 on Saturday. Junior Sydney Crane, from Jamestown, N.C., posted a 76 for a 155 total and is tied for 76th while Ann Laney, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., carded an 80 for a 162 total and is tied for 91st. Margaret Pentrack, a freshman from Pittsburgh, Pa. who is playing as an individual, is tied for 76th with a 155 total.
Kathleen Ekey of Alabama leads all individuals after firing a one-under 70 in the second round for a four-under 138. Sandra Gal of Florida and Stacy Lewis of Arkansas are tied for second place at two-under 140 after both carded even-par 71 on Saturday. Four players are tied for fourth place at even par 142 - Auburn's Cydney Clanton, Purdue's Junthima Gulyanamitta, Virginia's Lene Krog and Michigan State's Laura Kueny.
The final round of the 54-hole event will be played Sunday at Cherokee Country Club, a par 71, 5,932-yard layout.
