CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Juniors Brian Shriver and Garry Lewis scored first-half goals and the North Carolina men's soccer team never looked back, cruising to a 4-0 win over High Point Tuesday at Fetzer Field. Sophomore Eddie Ababio and junior Joan Carvajal added second-half scores for the Tar Heels (5-4-5), who will look for consecutive wins for just the second time this season Friday when they host Clemson.
Carolina dominated possession in the match, limiting the Panthers (5-9-1) to just four shots, including only one in the first half. Sophomore Brooks Haggerty made his second start of the season and recorded his third career shutout in just four starts. He needed to make just one save to record the clean sheet, which was the sixth of the season for Carolina.
The Tar Heels posted a 14-4 edge in shots, and the four goals marked the second-best offensive output of the season behind only the 7-0 win over Liberty on Oct. 2. Carolina has outscored its opponents 22-11 on the year.
On UNC's first goal of the night, sophomore Bill Dworsky fed Shriver, who beat a High Point defender and fired from 20 yards out to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead at the 24:44 mark. Dworsky, who collected his third assist on the play, chipped the ball from near midfield to a streaking Shriver, who sent a blast from just outside the 18 to the left side of the net. The goal was Shriver's second of the season and first since the Liberty match.
Lewis pushed the advantage to 2-0 at the 43:32 mark with his third goal of the season and second in the last three games. He dribbled to the 18 and chipped a shot from the left side to the upper right-hand corner of the net past HPU keeper Adam Ross, who made three saves and allowed two goals in the first half.
Ababio set up his own penalty kick at 60:41 when he made a run from his outside back position up the left flank and was brought down in the box after a give-and-go. Ababio beat keeper Corey Whisenhunt, who came on for the second half, just under the cross bar to the left side of the net for his first goal of the season and third of his career. Ababio also tacked on two assists for a game-high four points.
Carvajal added his first goal as a Tar Heel in the 79th minute when he sent a 23-yard blast off the near post and into the back of the net for the fourth score of the night for Carolina, which played 17 players on the match.
Redshirt freshman Bradley Brown and freshman Ryley Leech saw their first action of the season for the Tar Heels.
UNC continues its three-match home stand Friday against Clemson at 7:30 p.m. at Fetzer Field. A webcast of the match will be available live and on-demand at ACCSelect.com.
