Tar Heel Golfers Tie For Seventh At VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, VA. - The North Carolina men's golf team tied for seventh place at the VCU Shootout after struggling to a nine-over-par 297 in the final round. The Tar Heels finished with a one-over 865 total after firing rounds of even par 288 and eight-under 280 in the first two rounds. Penn State captured the team title with a 19-under 845 total after firing rounds of 283-279-283. Wisconsin was the runner-up, finishing three strokes back with an 848 total. Tennessee-Chattanooga and Wake Forest tied for third place with 849 totals.
Carolina was led by Kevin O'Connell, a freshman from Cary, N.C., who got his Tar Heel career off to a great start. He finished with a five-under 211 total after firing rounds of 67-68-76 to tie for fourth place in the individual race. Senior Barden Berry, from Kinston, N.C., finished at two-over 218 to tie for 26th place with rounds of 74-70-74. Reed Darsie, a senior from Chapel Hill, led the Tar Heels in the final round firing an even par 72. He posted a one-over 219 total to tie for 34th place after shooting 76-71 in the first two rounds. David Holzworth, a sophomore from Chapel Hill carded a four-over 220 total to tie for 41st place while junior Chase MacFarland, from Savannah, Ga., carded a 224 total to tie for 62nd place.
Kevin Foley of Penn State captured the individual title with a scorching 15-under 201 total after rounds of 65-68-68. Jonathan Hodge of Tennessee-Chattanooga was the runner-up finishing five strokes back at 206 after rounds of 68-70-68. Mocs teammate Derek Rende finished third with a 208 total after rounds of 67-72-69. Tied for fourth place with Carolina's O'Connell was Wake Forest's Chris Cannon and Wisconsin's Dan Woltman.
The 54-hole event was played at Hermitage Club which features a par 72, 6,955-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
