CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore forward Bill Dworsky scored two goals, both on assists from junior midfielder Michael Callahan, to lift North Carolina to a 3-2 win over Clemson in a key Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer match Sunday at Fetzer Field. With the victory, the Tar Heels (6-4-5, 3-3-0 ACC) have won consecutive games for just the second time this year with three matches left in the regular season.
In addition to Dworky's second multi-goal game of the season, classmate Zach Loyd converted a penalty kick late in the second half for the Tar Heels. Midfielder Mark Buchholz was responsible for both goals for the Tigers (6-9-1, 1-6-0 ACC), who were held to just four shots by Carolina's suffocating defense.
Dworsky put UNC on the board first at the 5:55 mark when he scored from five yards out on assists from Callahan and midfielder Garry Lewis. Lewis chipped the ball from the middle of the field to a streaking Callahan on the right flank. He crossed the ball into the box to Dworsky, who had a five-yard tap-in to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.
Clemson tied the game just 53 seconds later when Buchholz nailed a 19-yard free kick over the UNC wall and past keeper Tyler Deric, who allowed two goals and did not record a save.
The game remained 1-1 until the 43rd minute, when Loyd was fouled in the box and sent the ensuing penalty kick past Clemson keeper Joseph Bendik to give Carolina a 2-1 lead at intermission.
Just over 13 minutes into the second half, Dworsky struck again to give the Tar Heels a two-goal cushion. After a Tiger foul, Callahan sent a bending 25-yard free kick from the right flank to Dworksy, who flicked it in the net at the far post for his team-best sixth goal of the season. The assist was Callahan's fifth, which also leads the squad.
That goal proved to be the difference, as Buchholz trimmed the lead to just one with a PK in the 65th minute. UNC center back Andre Sherard was whistled for a foul in the box, and Buchholz struck the ball into the lower left corner of the net to cut the Carolina advantage to 3-2.
The Tar Heels' stout defense took over from there and allowed just one Clemson shot the rest of the way, as Carolina held on for the win to even its ACC record at 3-3-0.
UNC outshot Clemson, 9-4, and the teams had two corner kicks each. Bendick had two saves and allowed three goals.
The Tar Heels wrap up their three-match home stand Wednesday against Campbell at 7:30 p.m.
