CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina found itself in an early two-goal deficit and a second-half rally was too little too late, as Campbell registered a 2-1 win over the Tar Heels (6-5-5) in men's soccer action Wednesday at Fetzer Field. The victory was the second straight for the Camels (10-4-2) over Carolina after a 1-0 win in Buies Creek a year ago.
The Tar Heels finished with a 14-8 edge in on the short chart, including a 10-4 advantage in the second half but could manage only an Eddie Ababio goal in the 60th minute for their efforts. Josue Soto and Richard Jata provided the scoring for Campbell, who trimmed Carolina's lead in the all-time series to 14-4-1.
Possession was fairly even in the first half with four shots each, but Campbell made the most of its chances and put two in the back of the net to carry a 2-0 lead into intermission. Jata, a junior midfielder, assisted on the first goal and scored the second to pace the Camel attack.
The first score came in the 13th minute when Jata fed Soto, who netted his eighth goal of the season on a one-time volley from just inside the left side of the 18. Just over 12 minutes later, Jata scored a goal of his own on a 25-yard strike into the upper left-hand corner of the net off an assist from Ben York.
Trailing 2-0, Carolina finally got on the board in the 60th minute on Ababio's second goal in the last three games. He scored on the rebound of a Joan Carvajal shot that was saved by a Camel defender. Ababio, who started the match at outside back but moved up front late in the first half, punched home the rebound from five yards out on the left side of the net.
The Tar Heels pressed for the equalizer over the final 30 minutes but were unsuccessful. The best chances came on a give-and-go between Cameron Lewis and Scott Campbell that Lewis sent high over the crossbar and Brian Shriver free kick from 21 yards that also sailed just high after being deflected.
Carolina split time in goal with freshman Tyler Deric, who allowed two goals and made one save, playing the first half, and sophomore Brooks Haggerty coming on for the second period. Haggerty made one save over a scoreless 45 minutes.
Campbell keeper Aaron Johnson made four stops and allowed one goal.
The Tar Heels return to Atlantic Coast Conference action at No. 2 Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Saturday. A webcast of the match will be available live and on-demand at ACCSelect.com.
