ELON SERIES NOTES
North Carolina is 6-1 all-time against Elon in a seires that dates back to 1975, UNC's first season of women's basketball.
Elon was Carolina's opponent in the Tar Heels' first home game, a 70-68 win on Jan. 17, 1975.
Only one game in the series has been played outside of Chapel Hill. That game, played in Elon College, N.C., on Feb. 21, 1975, was also Carolina's only loss in the series. Elon triumphed, 83-71.
After a 24-year break in the series from 1976 to 2000, the two teams have met four times in the last seven seasons.
CAROLINA AGAINST IN-STATE NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS
The Tar Heels have dominated their in-state non-conference opponents historically. Among non-ACC teams from North Carolina, only High Point (2-1) has a winning record against Carolina.
UNC has an overall record of 75-18 against in-state opponents from outside the ACC.
Among these schools, only East Carolina (25), Appalachian State (20), UNC Greensboro (9) and Western Carolina (9) have played the Tar Heels more often than Elon.
With the addition of North Carolina Central in 2007, UNC has now played 19 different non-conference opponents from the state of North Carolina all-time. The Tar Heels will play just two such opponents in 2007-08.
NOTING THE PHOENIX
Elon is 1-2 on the season after a 49-43 win over North Carolina Central on Monday.
Tonight will be Elon's first road game of the season. Prior to last night's win over NCCU, the Phoenix dropped consecutive games to Penn (56-54) and Campbell (57-51).
Elon is led by senior guard Tierra Bumbrey, who is averaging 13.0 points per contest.
Tonight's matchup features two of the most long-tenured coaches in college basketball today. Between the two of them, Sylvia Hatchell (33rd season) and Brenda Paul (30th season) have coached in more than 1,800 games.
