University of North Carolina linebacker Durell Mapp and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks were named the Tar Heels' Most Valuable Players at the 2007 senior football banquet Thursday evening. The MVP awards were selected by a vote of the players. Senior tackle Kyndraus Guy was also voted the player with the most team spirit. The other awards were selected by the coaching staff.
Mapp started all 12 games and ranks first in the ACC in total tackles with 132 and second with 11.0 per game. The Burlington, N.C., native posted six games with double-digits in tackles, including a career-high 23 stops at NC State. He also had 18 at East Carolina, 12 vs. Virginia, 11 at South Florida, 14 vs. South Carolina and 12 vs. Duke. Mapp came to Carolina as a walk-on in 2004 and earned a scholarship after his freshman year. He was named second-team All-ACC this season. Mapp also won the George Barclay Award as the team's top linebacker.
Nicks set the UNC single-season record with 74 receptions, eclipsing the previous mark of 71 by Jarwarski Pollock in 2003. Nicks finished the season with 74 catches for 958 yards and five touchdowns. Over the last six games of the season, he had 43 receptions. Nicks also won the Art Weiner Award as the team's top receiver and the Charlie Justice Award for outstanding contribution on offense.
