Kloss, Felnagle Continue Winning Ways

NEW YORK --- The North Carolina women's track and field team, harnessing a wave of momentum from Friday's impressive win in the distance medley relay, picked up right where it left off Saturday at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational. And, again, the main noisemakers were members of that DMR team as sophomore Brie Felnagle and senior Georgia Kloss each added individual event wins to their weekend title haul.
Georgia Kloss posted the fastest time in the 800 meters run this year in the ACC in claiming the win. Her 2:07.07 time provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships.
Brie Felnagle picked up her second NCAA qualifying mark this year, adding a provisional qualifying time of 4:41.47 in the mile to the automatic mark she posted in the 3,000 meters earlier this year. In addition to giving the Tar Heels their third event win on the weekend, Felnagle's time was five seconds faster than the next-best competitor and stands as the ACC's best this year. It also moved her to third on the school's all-time list.
The UNC men, for their part, received a spectacular performance from senior Nick Owens, who hurled a 72-2 1/2 toss in the men's weight throw to take the event title in school record-setting fashion. The massive toss is the second-best effort in the nation this year and smashes the previous school record of 71-8 held by Sal Gigante.
With his throw, Owens became the first athlete in UNC history to top 72 feet - and 22 meters - in the event. Additionally, the mark set both meet and facility records and gave Owens his first win in 2007.
The UNC women also benefited from the exploits of Porscha Dobson, who ran a 8.40 time in a preliminary heat of the 60-meter hurdles to attain an NCAA provisional qualification. Additionally, Dobson's 8.45 clocking in the finals earned her a sixth-place finish. Also of note for the Tar Heels was Rhian Jenks' 12-7 1/2 clearance in the pole vault, good for a fourth place in the event, and a ninth-place run by the 4x400-meter relay team.
The Tar Heel men received a pair of seventh-place finishes Saturday. Senior Clay Ragan used a 1:51.84 effort in the 800 meters to take seventh, while freshman Donte Nall recorded a season-best 6-9 height in the high jump to earn his placing.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team also finished ninth for Carolina, posting a 3:14.80 time.
More information and complete scoring is available online at the Armory Web site.
Members of the team that did not travel to New York competed in the Carolina Invitational at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill. Results for that meet can be found here.
