Feb. 6, 2007
The undefeated 1957 national championship team will reunite in Chapel Hill this weekend, where the 50th anniversary of their historic title will be honored at halftime of the Wake Forest game. The day before that game, fans have the chance to meet all four living starters at Chapel Hill Sportswear.
Pete Brennan, Tom Kearns, Joe Quigg, and Lennie Rosenbluth will sign copies of Adam Lucas's book on the 1957 season, The Best Game Ever, starting at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9. This is the last scheduled '57 signing and the only opportunity to have your book signed by all four living starters from that team. Lucas will also be in attendance.
Rosenbluth is one of only seven players in Carolina basketball history to have his number retired. The 1957 National Player of the Year, he held the Carolina career scoring mark for 21 years and still ranks third today. He currently lives in Florida.
Quigg averaged 10.3 points and 8.6 rebounds during the championship year. His free throws in the third overtime of the national title game against Kansas are some of the most important shots in UNC basketball history.
Brennan's number-35 jersey is honored in the Smith Center rafters. His game-tying shot in the first overtime of the national semifinal against Michigan State allowed Carolina to play for the '57 national championship. He was a first team All-America and ACC Player of the Year during the 1957-58 season.
Kearns's number-40 jersey is also honored in the Smith Center rafters. He was the third-leading scorer on the '57 team and a second-team Converse All-America that same season. He is a two-time first-team All-ACC selection.
Chapel Hill Sportswear is located at 133 E. Franklin St. Questions about the signing can be directed to the store at 800-585-0086.
