Hansbrough Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Tyler Hansbrough scored 33 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Carolina to an 81-67 win over Michigan State in the secnd round of the NCAA Men's asketball Tournament and is the progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for March 12-18, 2007. Hansbrough made 10 of 17 shots from the floor and 13 of 17 from the line against the Spartans. It was the most points by a Tar Heel in an NCAA Tournament game since 1981 and was the third-most ever in an NCAA Tournament contest by a Tar Heel. Hansbrough also had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three assists in the first round win over Eastern Kentucky.

Freshman first baseman Dustin Ackley continued his red-hot start for the Tar Heels by going 14-for-21 (.667) with four runs scored and four RBI in five games last week. He went 10-for-13 in the Virginia series (.769) and at one point had 11 hits in 12 trips to the plate over a three-game span. After going 3-for-4 Wednesday vs. UNC Greensboro, Ackley posted back-to-back four-hit games against the Cavaliers. He also reached base in 12 consecutive official at-bats at one point and posted a .652 on-base percentage for the week. Ackley, who is riding a team-best 13-game hitting streak, is batting a team-best .481 (39-81) on the season and leads Carolina with 11 doubles, 27 RBI and a .704 slugging percentage. In six games in ACC play, Ackley is batting .640 (16-25) with six RBI.

Taylor came off the bench to tally five goals and one assist in No. 1 Carolina's 16-7 win over No. 5 Virginia on Saturday at Fetzer Field. Taylor also scored two goals earlier in the week in the home win over Old Dominion. The Tar Heels (8-0) are off to the second-best start in school history.

For a North Carolina team riding a school-record 20 game winning streak, Evans was the unquestionable star on a dominant offense that put up 31 runs in just four games (only one of which went the full seven innings) this week. Evans' red-hot bat helped her lead Carolina in batting average, hits, runs, RBI and total bases, and she was the only Tar Heel to record a home run on the week -- a two-run walkoff blast that gave UNC its second run-rule victory over Virginia and capped a series sweep of the Cavaliers to start ACC play. Evans batted .769 in the four games this week, going a mindblowing 10-13 with seven RBI. She added eight runs and had 15 total bases -- including two doubles -- as she factored directly into 15 of Carolina's 31 runs. Additionally, she added a stolen base and 10 putouts from the shortstop position.

Chris Kearney remained undefeated in dual match singles and in dual match doubles this spring as the No. 11 North Carolina men's tennis team improved to 12-0 on the season by beating San Diego 4-3 and San Diego State 5-1. Kearney, now 10-0 in singles this spring and 11-0 in doubles this spring with partner Taylor Fogleman, defeated Ryo Sekiguchi 6-3, 6-4 of San Diego and Juan Gomez of San Diego State 7-6, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. He and Fogleman also had two easy doubles wins at No. 3, winning 8-4 over USD and 8-3 over SDSU.

The sophomore attackman had a pair of career high games as the Tar Heels went 1-1 last week to put their record at 6-2 on the season. He scored a career high four goals in UNC's 9-7 loss to fifth-ranked Duke last Saturday. He also had a career high four assists in the Tar Heels' 13-6 win over Vermont earlier in the week. Wagner also added a goal in the victory over the Catamounts.

Chip Peterson set a school record in the 1650-yard freestyle to earn first-team All-America honors and he had a career best in the 500-yard freestyle to earn honorable mention All-America honors at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Peterson swam a school record and career best 14:55.53 to finish sixth in the 1650-yard freestyle at NCAA's. He also finished 14th in the 500-yard freestyle at 4:20.39 after going a career best 4:19.38 in the preliminaries. That time of 4:19.38 placed him third on UNC's all-time depth chart in the event.

Freshman Christine Nguyen scored a 9.900 on balance beam and also won the vault title in Carolina's gymnastics meet at New Hampshire. Carolina scored season-high score of 49.100 on balance beam. That is the highest score for Carolina on that apparatus since a 49.275 score in 2005 (Jan. 21 vs. William & Mary). Nguyen finished fourth on the floor exercise with a 9.800 and secured the all-around crown with a 39.300.
