The Tar Heels dropped their first series at home since going 0-2-1 against Miami in 2005, but avoided their first sweep at home since 2003 with a 9-4 win over Virginia in Sunday's series finale. Carolina went 3-2 on the week and improved to 18-3 overall and 4-2 in the ACC. The Tar Heels have already played No. 11 Miami and No. 7 Virginia in conference play and still sit in first in the ACC's Coastal Division.
Sunday's win against Virginia was the 899th for head coach Mike Fox in his 24-year career. He can earn victory No. 900 Tuesday against Towson.
Freshman first baseman Dustin Ackley continued his red-hot start for the Tar Heels by going 14-for-21 (.667) with four runs scored and four RBI in five games last week. He went 10-for-13 in the Virginia series (.769) and at one point had 11 hits in 12 trips to the plate over a three-game span. After going 3-for-4 Wednesday vs. UNC Greensboro, Ackley posted back-to-back four-hit games against the Cavaliers. He also reached base in 12 consecutive official at-bats at one point and posted a .652 on-base percentage for the week. Ackley, who is riding a team-best 13-game hitting streak, is batting a team-best .481 (39-81) on the season and leads Carolina with 11 doubles, 27 RBI and a .704 slugging percentage. In just 21 games played, Ackley has 13 multi-hit games. In six games in ACC play, Ackley is batting a league-best .640 (16-25) with six RBI.
Ackley is now second in the ACC in batting, hits, doubles and total bases and is third in slugging and fourth in RBI.
