WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Individual titles in the men's javelin and the men's decathlon highlighted the action for the North Carolina's men's and women's track teams at the Wake Forest Open on Friday. Justin Ryncavage, the 2006 national champion in the javelin, began his 2007 season with 229-9 heave, easily besting the field in automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships, while Mateo Sossah surged into the lead position in the decathlon with a solid second day of competition, finishing with 7,289-point total.
With his provisional NCAA qualifying score, Sossah moves to fifth in school history in the event in just his first outdoor collegiate meet. Additionally, Daniel Keller's new personal best of 6,866 put him in third place in the decathlon and gave the Tar Heels two of the top three finishers in the event. Keller used a new personal record in the pole vault (16-0 3/4) to earn 880 points on the way to his score.
Also standing out for the Tar Heel men was Donte Nall, who recorded a 6-8 3/4 height to take fifth overall in the men's high jump. Brook Baker ran a 14:55.76 to place seventh in the 5,000 meters as well for Carolina.
UNC's success in the multis events held true for the women as well, with Alexandra Coppadge posting a score of 4,699 to place third in the women's heptathlon.
Kelly Fazekas gave the Carolina women a second third-place finisher, using a 51-0 1/4 toss to take third in the women's shot put. The mark, a new personal best, automatically qualifies her for the NCAA Regional and moves her into second place all-time in school history in the event.
Addie Bracy came in second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, posting a 10:42.35 time. Morgan Stengel ran a 11:04.12 to join Bracy in the top five, finishing fourth, and Laura Cummings finished seventh in 11:14.40.
Also of note for UNC was a 12-5 1/2 clearance in the pole vault from Rhian Jenks, giving her a fourth-place finish.
As well, Tyra Johnson, Shardae Anderson and Judith Bataille all advanced out of the preliminaries in the 100-meter dash for the Tar Heels.
