Evans, GA - After a somewhat disappointing tournament last week, the number-17th ranked University of North Carolina men's golf team rebounded to take sole possession of first place on Day One of the Administraff ASU Invitational. The Tar Heels posted a nine-under 279 which was three strokes better than second place Coastal Carolina. Tennessee, South Carolina, and Georgia State round out the top five.
Senior Reed Darsie and sophomore Robert Riesen led the Tar Heels by firing four-under 68s. Both players birdied five holes while bogeying just one. Senior captain Martin Ureta started off slowly with three straight bogeys, but notched five crucial birdie putts to keep the Tar Heels in first, with a one-under 71. Junior Barden Berry collected an even-par 72 to ensure all four Carolina scorers were at even-par or better.
South Carolina's George Bryan IV leads the tournament after a six-under 66. He has competition in second place from Tennessee's Jonathan Mount who fired a five-under 67. Two of Carolina's top golfers, Darsie and Riesen are tied for third after round one. Dustin Johnson is the final member of the top five after posting a 71 for Coastal Carolina.
The tournament continues tomorrow with another 18 holes at the 7301-yard Champions Retreat Golf Club.
