CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a highly competitive match Sunday afternoon at the Cone Kenfield Tennis Center, the North Carolina men's tennis team overpowered Florida State, 4-3, to remain undefeated on the season. The No. 6 Tar Heels improved to 17-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC, while the No. 27 Seminoles fell to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the ACC. In this heated match, Sam Paul earned his 230th career win at UNC and Sebastian Guejman secured his 50th career win in both singles and doubles.
Tough competition commenced from the beginning of doubles action with the clinching point coming down to the last court. The Tar Heel duo of Taylor Fogleman and Chris Kearney jumped off to a big lead and captured the first win, 8-2, at the three seed over Jean-Yves Aubone and Maciek Sykut. The Seminoles pulled doubles even with a win at the one seed; Sam Chang and Jonathas Sucupira defeated Lenny Gullan and David Stone, 8-5. All looked to court two where Sebastian Guejman and Stefan Hardy were battling against Ytai Abougzir and Bradley Mixson. The Seminoles battled back from a 7-3 deficit to bring the score 7-6. Hardy and Guejman found themselves down in match point, zero-thirty, but bounced back clinching the doubles point, 8-6.
With Carolina leading 1-0, Florida State evened the score one-all with a win at the six seed in singles action. Bradley Mixson defeated Karl Wishart in straight sets to even the playing field. Securing his third straight win, lone senior Guejman put the Tar Heels back on top, 2-1, with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the two seed over Mat Cloer. Guejman's dual match record improved to 11-1. Junior Benjamin Carlotti gave Carolina a 3-1 lead over Florida State with a victory at the one seed. In a high-spirited battle, No. 46 Carlotti ousted No. 82 Ytai Abougzir, 6-3, 6-4. With the win, Carlotti improved his overall record to 18-10.
The clinching point followed at the two seed when Hardy downed Aubone in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-1. Florida State won the last two matches at the three and five seeds. Freshman Chris Kearney dropped his first dual match this afternoon with a 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 loss at the three seed. After Fogleman easily won his first set, 6-0, Sam Chang came back to take the next two, 7-5, 6-2.
This win marked Head Coach Sam Paul's 230th win while at North Carolina. He was very pleased with the team's energy and effort. "It was a very good win," said Paul. "Florida State battled very hard, but we showed great team unity and I'm really proud of our guys."
