Carolina's 5-0 shutout of Virginia puts it in the ACC title game for the first time since 1990. The Tar Heels own a 4-4 record in eight previous trips to the championship game. Carolina is now 62-57 all-time in ACC Tournament action.
The Tar Heels will be in search of their fifth ACC title this academic year Sunday. Carolina already owns wins in men's and women's basketball, women's soccer and women's swimming and diving.
After losing six straight ACC Tournament games, the Tar Heels have now won back-to-back times in the event for the first time since 2004. Saturday's shutout was Carolina's first in ACC tourney play since a 14-0 blanking of Maryland in 2004. The Tar Heels last won three straight ACC Tournament games in '04.
With the win over fifth-ranked Virginia, the Tar Heels improved to 15-6 against nationally-ranked opponents this season. Carolina has won nine of its last 11 versus ranked teams.
UNC has won 12 of its last 14 games entering Sunday's championship game.
Freshman right-hander Alex White allowed just two hits over seven innings for the longest shutout appearance of his career. White also went seven innings at Maryland May 19 for back-to-back seven inning starts for the first time in his career. He has now allowed just three runs on 10 hits over the last 14 innings and is 6-4 with a 3.35 ERA.
Junior closer Andrew Carignan earned his 12th save with two shutout innings and now has 27 in his career to rank second all-time at Carolina.
Carolina's shutout was its sixth of the season and first since a 9-0 win at Elon May 8. The Tar Heels' last blanking of an ACC team came April 13 against Duke.
Freshman first baseman Dustin Ackley went 2-for-4 with an RBI to extend his current hitting streak to 15 games. He now owns the top two hitting streaks for Carolina this season and has hit safely in 54 of 59 games on the season. With six hits in the tournament, Ackley now has 107 on the season.
Ackley now has 63 RBI on the season to break Tim Federowicz's UNC freshman record set in 2006. Ackley now owns Tar Heel rookie records for hits and RBI.
Junior left fielder Reid Fronk had two hits and two RBI for the second straight game in the tournament. He now has a career-best 49 RBI and needs just one more to become the third Tar Heel to reach the 50-RBI mark on the season.
Freshman outfielder Tim Fedroff singled and scored a run to push his career-best hitting streak to nine games. He is second on the team with a .368 batting average.
