Tar Heels Look Strong In Season Opener

The University of North Carolina gymnastics team opened the 2008 season with a win at the George Washington Invitational, scoring a team total of 193.575. Head coach Derek Galvin expressed his delight with the team's performance and is eager to see his athletes continue their efforts in attempt to reach their goal of becoming EAGL Champions.
"I am very pleased with the execution of the team on each event," said Galvin. "It was one of our strongest opening team performances that we've ever had at Carolina. Coach Jernigan and I are very happy with the way the team performed and with the outcome of the meet. The strong leadership of our seniors provoked a strong performance from every class."
Christine Nguyen earned first place in the all-around with a score of 38.875, including her first place finish on the balance beam. Junior Jen Valby won vault and sophomore Kara Wright took first on floor. Rachel Schneider competed on uneven bars for the first time in her collegiate career and had a strong performance. Karli Jones had an excellent debut as a Tar Heel, placing fourth in the all-around behind teammates Christine Nguyen and Kara Wright.
With such strong efforts from all classes of the UNC gymnastics team, Galvin is looking forward to getting back to Chapel Hill and beginning preparation from the rest of the 2008 season. On February 1st, the team will travel to Towson, Maryland to compete in the Governor's Cup.
