Carolina forwards Tyler Hansbrough and LaToya Pringle each topped the 30-point mark in key wins and share Progress Energy Tar Heels of the Week honors for January 21-27, 2008.
Hansbrough, a junior from Poplar Bluff, Mo., scored 35 points and grabbed eight rebounds, both game highs, in the Tar Heels' 98-82 win at Miami (UNC's only game of the week). Tyler was 10 for 15 from the floor and 15 for 16 from the free throw line. The 35 points were the second-most in a game in his career and his personal best in a road contest. He scored 27 points in the second half. The 15 free throws marked a personal best. He moved past Rick Fox, Billy Cunningham and Rashad McCants into 14th place in UNC career scoring and past Randolph Childress and Julius Hodge into seventh place in ACC career free throws made.
Pringle, a senior from Fayetteville, scored 12 of her career-high 31 points in the second overtime of No. 3 UNC's 97-86 double overtime win over No. 4 Maryland on Sunday. The Fayetteville, N.C., senior added nine rebounds in the win over the Terps after scoring a team-high 20 points in a loss at No. 1 Connecticut on Monday. Carolina is now alone atop the ACC standings with a perfect 5-0 conference record.
