CHAPEL HILL --- Former North Carolina All-America guard Ivory Latta will have her jersey retired and will receive the University's Patterson Medal during halftime of Saturday's ACC opener against Georgia Tech. Latta, the 2006 National Player of the Year, will become just the second player in program history to have her jersey retired, joining current assistant coach Charlotte Smith.
Latta finished her amazing career with 2,285 points, the most in school history. She also finished with 345 career three-pointers, the most in Atlantic Coast Conference history. Latta was a three-time All-America performer as well as a consensus first-teamer in 2006 and 2007. She was named National Player of the Year, the criterion for jersey retirement, by ESPN.com, Basketball Times, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and Gballmag.com in 2006.
The Patterson Medal, given since 1924, is the University's most prestigious athletic award, and it is presented each year to Carolina seniors who have demonstrated excellence in athletics throughout his and her college career. The award is based on athletic accomplishment, with sportsmanship, leadership and general conduct as major considerations. The selection is made by a committee of athletic officials, faculty members and student representatives. The award was first given by Dr. Joseph Patterson in memory of his brother, John Durand Patterson and has since been continued by the Patterson family.
