Carolina Cruises Past Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - North Carolina picked up its third straight win Friday night in Chestnut Hill, Mass. as the Tar Heels took down Boston College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-22), to improve to 14-9 overall and 8-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Senior Lauren Prussing continued her impressive play as she led the Tar Heels with 13 kills on a .296 hitting percentage and will look to push Carolina's streak to four on Sunday when the Tar Heels take on Maryland at 1 p.m.
oston College picked up the opening point of the night on a Melanie Cimino kill before Prussing tallied three kills with Heather Brooks mixing in a service ace as Carolina jumped out to a 4-1 lead and never looked back. Carolina took the opening set 25-17 on the back of a .459 hitting percentage. The Tar Heels committed just two errors in the set as Carolina recorded 19 of its 25 points via the kill. Prussing led the team with five, while Brooks and Christine Vaughen added four apiece and outside hitters Courtney Johnston and Suzanne Haydel each finished with three in the opener.
The second set was a much closer affair as the score was tied seven different times and changed hands on four separate occasions as neither team could gain an offensive advantage. The Tar Heels hit .111 in the set, while Boston College was held to a .054 mark with Carolina coming out on top with a 25-21 win. Carolina held what looked to be a comfortable 12-6 lead before Boston College stormed back and pulled within a point at 13-12, thanks to a 6-1 run. The Eagles would eventually knot things up at 17-17 before taking a 19-17 lead taking advantage of a Tar Heel error and a kill. Back-to-back points for Carolina would even things up at 19-19 before the teams traded the next two points. With the score tied at 20-20 a pair of attack errors by Boston College gave Carolina a 22-20 lead that it would not relinquish en route to the 25-21 win.
Prussing and Johnston fueled Carolina in the third and final set as the Tar Heels picked up their third consecutive win and fifth in their last six matches. The outside duo picked up four kills apiece as Carolina held off a late Boston College charge for the 25-22 win. The Tar Heels held a 12-7 advantage early on before the Eagles pulled within two at 20-18. A kill by Megan Owens and a block by Brooks and Johnston pushed Carolina in front 22-18 forcing a Boston College timeout. A kill by Johnston and a pair by Prussing closed out the set and the match to improve Carolina to 14-9 on the year and 8-4 in ACC play.
Senior Brianna Eskola shared top dig honors on the night with Suzanne Haydel as the duo each tallied 13 on the night, while freshman Erica Behm finished a dig shy of a double-double with 24 assists. The Tar Heels will look to keep their winning streak alive on Sunday when they travel to College Park, Md. to take on the Terrapins in a contests slated to start at 1 p.m.
