CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The second round of the Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course was marked by beautiful Chapel Hill weather and exciting play. Wake Forest, which began the day tied for first with Virginia, took control of first place with a tournament low 291 total. The Tar Heels improved from third to tied for second place with Virginia after the round.
"It's going to be a shootout tomorrow, " Tar Heel head coach Sally Austin said. "I'm pleased with where we are. We played well in spots. We had some bumps, but that's golf."
Freshman Catherine O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., led Carolina with an even round 72, tying for sixth place with 146, and senior Lauren Hunt, of Little River S.C., fired a 73 to put her in a tie for fourth place with a one-over-par 145 total. Kate Thomas, a junior from Murwillumbah, Australia, shot a 74. Thomas is tied for 26th going into the final round with a two-day score of 151. Freshman Allie White, from Lancaster, Ohio, finished the day with a 78 and teammate Sydney Crane, a senior from Jamestown, N.C., shot a 79. White is tied for 37th place with 154 while Crane is tied for 52nd at 156. Jordan Allyne, of Bellevue, Wash., and competing as an individual, shot an 80 and is tied for 52nd place with Crane. Margaret Pentrack, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, Pa., and also competing as an individual shot an 83 and is tied for 73rd.
Wake Forest's Natalie Sheary leads all competitors after Saturday's second round with a score of 141. Louisville's Cindy LaCrosse shot a 68 in the second round, the tournament's best so far. LaCrosse is in 2nd place with a 142 total.
Carolina and Virginia battled all day for control of second place, but finished the day tied at 596. Wake Forest holds a commanding 11-stroke lead over the Tar Heels and the Cavaliers. Going into the final round of play, the Demon Deacons stand at nine-over 585 and Wake Forest head coach Dianne Dailey was proud of her team's strong finish.
"It was nice and consistent with the scores. We had a few more putts go in the hole today," Dailey said. "I think we got off to a little bit of a shaky start. The students were a little bit nervous, but they pulled it together and really finished strong. We hit more greens and had fewer putts so that helps us out. We're trying to get some really good, solid rounds under 294. If we can keep doing that, that's what we want to do.
Austin is looking forward to playing tomorrow's final round.
"I just want us to go out tomorrow and have fun," Austin said. "Let the putts fall when they fall because we'll make them if we just stay out of our own way. I still don't believe we've played our best round yet."
The Tar Heel Invitational concludes Sunday at UNC Finely Golf Course. The course features a par-72, 6,285-yard layout. There is no admission and the public is invited to attend. There will be a shotgun start at 9:15 Sunday morning.
