Tar Heels Open Play At The Duals In The Desert

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. --- North Carolina junior Sanaz Marand's flight one victory highlighted the first day of play at the Duals In The Desert at the Desert Princess Country Club's Moore Tennis Academy near Palm Springs. Marand rolled past Stephanie Davison of Texas in the top flight, 6-1, 6-0, to advance to Saturday's semifinals. Freshman Shinann Featherston, senior Laura Reichert and freshman Jocelyn Ffriend were also first round singles winners.
Marand, ranked No. 10 in the preseason ITA poll, will face No. 6 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern in Saturday's semis. In flight two, No. 23 Katrina Tsang fell to No. 27 Csilla Borsanyi of Baylor, 7-5, 6-1. Senior Sophie Grabinski competed in flight three, losing to Gabriella Mejia of Miami, 6-1, 7-6 (4).
Featherston was a winner in flight four singles, topping Miami's Alessa Waibel in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Flight five had a pair of Tar Heels in action. Reichert was a winner over No. 108 Federica Van Adrichem of Clemson, 7-6 (5), 6-4, while fellow senior Meg Fanjoy fell to Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova, 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Jelena Durisic was outlasted by No. 101 Nazlie Ghazal of Northwestern in flight six, 6-4, 6-4. Ffriend easily dispatched Julia Wiegand of Texas in flight seven, 6-1, 6-2, while fellow freshman Haley Hemm was forced to retire in her flight seven match against Northwestern's Keri Robison. Hemm trailed 6-2, 3-6, 1-0, when the match was stopped.
On the doubles side, the No. 21 tandem of Marand and Tsang took care of Texas' Krista Damico and Marija Milic, 8-3, in flight one. Featherston and Grabinski were flight two winners, outlasting Northwestern's Samantha Murray and Lauren Liu, 9-7, while senior Austin Smith and Hemm lost to Borsanyi and Kasia Siwosz, 8-4. In flight three, senior Meg Fanjoy joined Reichert to defeat Karolina Filipiak and Zuzana Chmelarova of Baylor in convincing fashion, 8-2.
