CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina scored the game's first 16 points and held the visitors without a field goal for almost eight minutes as the Tar Heels defeated the Premier Players, 99-69, Friday night at the Dean E. Smith Center. Senior Rashanda McCants led all scorers with 20 points, while sophomore Italee Lucas added 19 and shot 5 of 7 from beyond the arc. The game was the final exhibition for UNC, which opens its regular season next Friday against Western Carolina in the first round of the preseason WNIT.
Carolina opened the game with a 16-0 run, capped by a Lucas three just over five minutes in. A pair of free throws from Courtney McDaniel at the 14:12 mark finally got Premier Players on the board, but the result was never in doubt. The Tar Heels shot 46.8 percent from the field in the first half and went to the locker room up 50-26.
McCants finished just shy of a double-double with 20 points and eight rebounds. In addition to McCants and Lucas, a pair of Carolina freshmen finished in double figures. Laura Broomfield came off the bench to pour in 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Chay Shegog added 10 points and three blocks in just 13 minutes.
Sophomore Cetera DeGraffenreid finished with just six points, but dished out a game-high eight assists to go with three steals in 27 minutes. Sherell Sowho led the Premier Players with 19 points, while former Tar Heel Kenya McBee finished with four points and six rebounds.
UNC will be off until Friday, Nov. 14, when the Tar Heels host Western Carolina in the opening round of the preseason WNIT.
