UNC Sweeps George Mason In Swimming Action Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Tar Heel swimmers and divers swept George Mason in an impressive manner at Eppley Recreation Natatorium on Saturday. Carolina men won 13 events on the way to posting a victory and the women took eight. The Tar Heel men defeated the Patriots 228-71 while the Tar Heel women claimed a 219-80 triumph over GMU.
Sophomore Rebecca Kane led the Carolina women with three wins on the day. Kane was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:43.28. She dominated the sprint freestyle events, taking the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best 23.29 and 100-yard freestyle in 50.89.
Also leading the women were double-event winners Megan Steeves and Katura Harvey. Steeves was part of the winning 200-yard medley relay and took first place in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:01.03. Harvey led Carolina to a 1-2-3-4-5 finish in the 500-yard with a time of 4:58.95. She took the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:56.83.
Four Tar Heel men posted two wins during the tri-meet.
Sophomore Joe Kinderwater won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:29.45 and the 1000-yard freestyle in an impressive 9:09.44.
Sophomore Tyler Harris won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.34 and the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.43.
Sophomore Vinny Pryor swept the breaststroke events by winning the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.52 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:03.62.
Diver David Solarz won both the one- and three-meter diving boards, scoring 336.70 and 311.50, respectively.
The following Tar Heels were single event winners on Saturday:
Women's 200-yard freestyle: Aubrette Biegel, 1:51.60.
Men's 100-yard backstroke: Tommy Wyher, 50.09. (Carolina took top 4 spots)
Women's 200-yard butterfly: Keri McAfee, 2:04.27
Men's 200-yard butterfly: Jason McLaughlin, 1:50.46
Men's 100-yard freestyle: Jeff James, 45.91 (Tar Heels took top 4 places)
Men's 100-yard butterfly: Brad Hamilton, 50.46
Men's 200-yard individual medley: Yi-Khy Saw, 1:53.24.
The Tar Heels will next travel to Columbia, S.C. Nov. 20-22 for the Gamecock Invitational.
