GREENSBORO, N.C. --- North Carolina's Jessica Breland and Virginia's Ariana Moorer were named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Player and Rookie of the Week for the week ending Dec. 7. Breland tallied 29 points in the second-ranked Tar Heels' 72-63 win over No. 18 Ohio State in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge, while Moorer had a pair of double-digit scoring outings to lead No. 19 Virginia in wins over Illinois and East Carolina.
Breland continued her strong play away from Chapel Hill with a 29-point effort at No. 18 Ohio State Wednesday night. In the marquee game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the junior from Kelford, N.C., was 11-of-15 from the field, including a perfect 2-of-2 on three-point attempts and 5-of-6 from the foul line. The forward also added six rebounds, five steals and two blocks in 32 minutes against the Buckeyes.
Moorer had her first double-double and set a career-high with 14 rebounds and 18 points at Illinois last week in the league's ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The freshman from Woodbridge, Va., followed up that performance by setting a new career-high with 19 points against East Carolina. The guard averaged 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game for the week.
The Tar Heels, who are in the midst of a 10-day final exam break, will host Coastal Carolina Saturday, Dec. 13, at noon at the Smith Center.
