On Friday, February 1, SportSouth presents an original program celebrating Black History Month and honoring African-American sports icons in the South. Southern Sports Pioneers "Profiles in Character," featuring interviews with Hank Aaron, Sylvester Croom and Charles Scott, debuts at 7 p.m.
Spotlight: Southern Sports Pioneers "Profiles in Character," hosted by Ambassador Andrew Young, highlights three extraordinary African-American athletes, who set records on the playing field and broke barriers socially. With individual interview segments from major league baseball icon Hank Aaron; Mississippi State football coach Sylvester Croom, the first African-American head football coach in the SEC; and former University of North Carolina basketball standout Charles Scott, the first African-American scholarship basketball player at UNC and 1968 Olympian, Spotlight: Southern Sports Pioneers "Profiles in Character" tells these athletes' stories in their own words and illustrates their struggles and triumphs, on and off the field.
The show will also air on Feb. 6 at 2:30 p.m., Feb 10 at 9:30 p.m., Feb. 14 at 11 p.m. and Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
