
UNC Tied For 3rd Place At ACC Championships

ATLANTA, GA. - Highlighted by a school record-setting performance in the 200-yard medley relay, the North Carolina men's swimming and diving team is tied for third place after the opening day of the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatics Center.
Both the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay teams finished in fourth place to give the Tar Heels 60 points. Virginia leads the meet with 80 points, followed by host Georgia Tech with 66 points. North Carolina, defending ACC champion Florida State and Virginia Tech are tied for third with 60 points. Clemson is sixth with 54 points followed by Maryland with 48 points, Duke with 40 points, NC State with 22 points and Boston College with 18 points.
UNC's 200-yard medley relay finished fourth in a school record time of 1:27.97, also an NCAA "B" qualifying time. The relay consisted of freshman Josh Hafkin (22.42), junior Brad Mitchell (24.86), freshman Tommy Wyher (20.94) and senior Robby Swendiman (19.75). The previous school record was established back in 1999 at 1:28.27. That relay included Ted Brisson (22.68), Brad Kline (24.68), Tucker Shade (21.06) and Kevin Erndl (19.88).
North Carolina finished fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay in 6:34.66, dropping 12.48 off the school's seed time going into the event. The relay included sophomore Jeff James (1:39.84), freshman Tyler Harris (1:38.60), senior Philip Owen (1:37.31) and junior Yi-Khy Saw (1:38.91). James set his personal best time on the front end of the relay in the 200-yard freestyle by going 1:39.84. His old best time was 1:39.86.
Preliminaries will be held tomorrow morning in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley and 50-yard freestyle beginning at 11 a.m. Finals will begin at 7 p.m. in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, one-meter diving and 200-yard freestyle relay.
