Hansbrough Named Progress Energy Performer Of The Week

Tyler Hansbrough earned MVP honors in leading Carolina to the 2008 ACC Tournament championship and is the Progress Energy Tar Heel of the Week for March 10-16, 2008. Hansbrough scored 22 points against Florida State, had 26 points and the game-winning shot with 0.8 seconds to play in the semifinal win over Virginia Tech and added 16 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game victory over Clemson.

Sophomore second baseman Kyle Seager drove in a team-high 10 runs in a 4-1 week for No. 3 North Carolina. He hit .409 (9-22) to run his career-best hitting streak to 13 games. The Kannapolis, N.C., native had three multi-hit games on the week, including a 3-for-5 effort against No. 20 Coastal Carolina. He also matched his career high with three RBI twice this week, including Sunday in a 6-0 win over Virginia Tech. Seager added three doubles and a triple en route to a .636 slugging percentage. On the season, Seager is batting .391 with three home runs and a team-best 25 RBI.

Ann Laney tied for eighth place at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic played this past weekend in Baton Rouge, La. Laney fired three two-over-par 74s for a 222 total and her first top 10 finish this year.
The Tar Heels tied for eighth place in the 17-team field. Carolina carded rounds of 302-301-303 for a 906 total. The 54-hole event was played at The University Club, a par 72, 6,511-yard layout.
Carolina's next action is March 28-30 at the Bryan National Collegiate in rowns Summit, N.C.

Kevin O'Connell tied for ninth place at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational played in Statesboro, Ga., this past weekend. O'Connell carded a two-under-par 214 total after firing rounds of two-over 74, four-under 68 and even par 72.
The Tar Heels finished 10th in the 18-team field with an 885 total. Carolina posted rounds of 298-290-297. The 54-hole event was played at Forest Heights Country Club, a par 72, 6,962-yard layout.
Carolina's next event is the Administaff Augusta State Invitational which will be played April 4-6 in Evans, Ga.
CHRISTINE NGUYEN
Gymnastics
Sophomore, Plano, Texas
Christine Nguyen had a spectacular meet at NC State, winning the balance beam title and finishing third in the all-around. Nguyen's 9.925 on beam matched her career high, which she set earlier this year at West Virginia. Nguyen scored a 9.800 on vault, a 9.600 on uneven bars and a 9.800 on floor for a 39.125 all-around score. She was narrowly edged out in the all-around by NC State's Leigha Hancock (39.200) and LSU's Sabrina Franceschelli (39.150).
