Carolina Women's Golf Jumps Into Fifth At ACC Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA -- The North Carolina women's golf team jumped ahead two spots at ACC Championships landing in fifth place at the conclusion of the second round. The Tar Heels, who fired a 14-over-par 302 on Saturday, finished the round with a 30-over-par 606. The team is led by Sydney Crane who carded an equal 72 this afternoon. Crane, a junior from Jamestown, N.C., will enter the third round tied for eighth with a three-over-par 147 total.
Tied for 16th is junior Lauren Hunt, of Little River, S.C., who carded a four-over-par 76, bringing her total score to a six-over-par 150. Sophomore Kate Thomas, of Bathurst, Australia, is four strokes behind Hunt and is tied for 25th with a ten-over-par 154. Ann Laney, a senior from Charlotte, N.C., is tied for 28th with a 12-over-par 156 total while senior Laura Caniff, of Russell, Ky., is in 41st place with a 23-over-par 167.
Duke's second-round performance placed them alongside Virginia in the top spot with a three-over-par 579. Florida State is in third with a 13-over-par 589. Wake Forest is in fourth with a 20-over-par 596, placing them ahead of the fifth-placed Tar Heels.
For the individuals, Virginia's Calle Nielson pulled into first place after firing a two-under-par 70 on Saturday, giving her a four-under-par 140 total. Duke's Amanda Blumenherst, who tied for eighth in the previous round, is now in second place with a three-under-par 141. Tied for third with a one-under-par 143 are Duke's Jennifer Pandolfi and Florida State's Caroline Westrup. Allie Bodemann of Wake Forest rounds out the top five with an equal 144.
The results of the ACC Championship will count towards the final score of this year's Carlyle Cup. One point will be awarded to either North Carolina or Duke depending upon the team that finishes the highest. Carolina currently leads 18-6 and has already clinched a win in this year's competition.
The Championship will resume on Sunday at the LPGA International Legends Course, which features a par 72, 6,315-yard layout. Tee times for the third, and final, round will begin at 7:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
